She preceded him in death June 21, 2009. Surviving are sons James Phillip (Rita) and David (Janet) Butts; daughter Edith Ellen (Walter) Benefield; 7 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Ina France, Gayle Coffman-Lee and Shirley Butts, and brothers Charlie Mearns and Jim Butts. Attended school in Veedersburg and earned a G.E.D at South Vermillion High School and received a diploma at Fountain Central High School. Served in the US Naval Reserves and served during WW II. He leased the service station in Veedersburg and operated it until Dec. 27, 1981. He had also driven the Van Buren School Bus, served on the Veedersburg Fire Department, Van Buren Township Advisory Board and Fountain County Council. Membership include Sterling Christian Church, American Legion Post #288, Vice-Commander of the 6th district American Legion, k Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute and Past master and member of Masonic Lodge #491. Service 11am Saturday, November 22 at Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg with David Butts and Pastor Gary Johnson officiating. Visitation 4-7:45pm Friday with Masonic service at 7:45pm. Memorial donations to American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
