  • Notes
    • San Bernardino County Third District Supervisor 1862-1863 Chairman November 17-December 20 1862

      Son of Branaird and Elizabeth(Clark)Tyler. At the age of 21 he came across the plains to Salt Lake City where he remained for a year and then completed his journey to San Bernardino.Mr.Tyler worked on John C.Fremont's survey party. Soon after the settlement of San Bernardino the colonists desired to establish mail connections with the outside world. Mr.Tyler was one of the first mail carriers, driving an oxen-drawn "mud wagon"on an irregular schedule between Los Angeles and San Bernardino.
      For several years during the early days, Mr.Tyler's meat market was the only store of its kind in the small community. After selling the store he entered various other buisnesses and occupations. He was elected first DEPUTY SHERIFF. First JUSTICE OF THE PEACE, not an easy position. There was considerable lawlessness in this frontier town and the result was that he was a terror to evil doers and had great support from those favoring law and order. In 1859 was elected San Bernardino County Assesor. He was appointed to finish Third District Supervisor Cornelius Jensen's seat after Mr. Jensen resigned.
      In Salt Lake City on May 14,1865 Mr.Tyler had married Rachel Moore. Six children where born to them;
      George W.Tyler
      Lizzie Anne Tyler Colson
      Emery B. Tyler
      Urban A.Tyler
      John Hugh Tyler
      Edward G.Tyler

      He was 45 years old when he died. He had been affiliated with the Masonic order for over thirty years and was a member of th San Bernardino Lodge. He is buried in the Mason section of the Cemetery.
