Notes - Moore Genealogy of some of the ancestors and descendants of John Harvey Moore, of Payson, Utah Publication: FHL film #1035851 Text: This is a compilation of pedigree charts and family group sheets for several of John Harvey Moore's ancestors and many of his descendants
John was the son of Andrew Moore and Rebecca Curry. He was born in Georgetown, Brown, Ohio. He was their oldest child and had six younger brothers and sisters. John's parents joined the L. D. S. church in 1833 when John was seventeen years old and moved to Missouri the following spring.
John was baptized 7 July 1837 in Far West, Missouri, not far from Clay county, where his father owned a farm. When Governor Boggs issued the Extermination Order a public meeting was held in Far West. They selected a committee to determine the best way to get the poor out of Missouri and to determine how many worthy members would need assistance. They were told to draft a resolution for the members to consider. J. Harvey Moore's signature was one of many recorded on the resolution. John was driven from the state with the other members of his faith and settled in McDonough county, Illinois. In 1841 he moved to Nauvoo were he married Clarrissa Jane Drollinger 6 October 1841. Their first child, a girl, was born in Nauvoo the following August. They attended the Nauvoo second ward. The 1842 tax list gives the
location of their land as 6N 8W. Their second daughter was born in
Montabello, also in Hancock county. John and Clarrissa and their daughters were forced to leave Illinois with the other Saints and their first son was born in Lee County, Iowa, in March 1847. Their next child was born across the state in Big Pidgeon, Pottawattamie county. John took his family to Utah in 1852 with the 3rd Company under Captain C.D. Howell. His parents were part of the same company. They lived first in Provo and then in Sanpete county before they settled in Payson. The town was still wild when they arrived and John had to help defend the settlement during the Indian wars. He married a young widow with a baby daughter 9 May 1856. Her name was Polly Lucina Sheffield. She would give him two more sons. That fall, he was sent out to meet the handcart companies who had been delayed and were trapped by the weather. Both of his feet were frozen.

In 1858 he took a third wife, Mary Soar Taylor who had come to Utah with the Martin Handcart Company. In May 1860 he took his wives to the Endowment House to be sealed to him. His second wife Lucina wanted to be sealed to her first husband instead and the matter resulted in their divorce. He tried to keep their sons with him but her brother persuaded him to let the children go with her. On 1 May 1874 the "Order of Enoch" was established in Sanpete county. J.H. Moore was Treasurer and L.H. Jackman of Salem, Utah county, was the Assistant Secretary. John was a prominent resident of Payson. He and his family operated the Moore Hotel at what is now 94 W 1st N. Clarrissa was often called away to act as midwife. John also worked a farm. A story about the Moores has been repeated many times. John and Clarrissa owned several geese that they kept in the yard of the hotel. They were fed table scraps. A neighbor who made grape wine occasionally gave them her scraps as well. One day as they prepared for church Clarrissa looked out and saw the geese lying dead in the yard. There was no clue as to what had killed them. They decided to pluck the feathers before church. They left the pile of carcasses in the yard. On the way home a friend stopped them and asked what was wrong with their geese. To which John replied "They're dead. That's what's the matter." But the man had seen them stumbling about the yard with all their feathers missing. The geese weren't dead, they were dead drunk!
Death of John Harvey Moore, a Veteran and Pioneer
Payson, Utah Co., Nov. 16,?Last night John Harvey Moore passed quietly to his rest, after a short illness of about eight days, of old age and general debility. Father Moore, so-called by his old
acquaintances here, was one of the pioneers of Payson, coming here in 1852, accompanied by his wife and four children, who yet survive him--now his descendants number 127, as follows: 12 children, 92 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren. Brother Moore was born April 9th, 1816, at Georgetown, Brown county, Ohio, making him 83 years at the time of his decease--his wife surviving has been his partner for 58 years. In his boyhood he saw President U.S. Grant, then a boy of his own age, driving the horse to turn the bark mill in his father's tan yard. Brother Moore was baptized at Far West in June, 1837; passed through the troubles of the Saints in Missouri and Illinois; was in the government's service as teamster during the Mexican war. In the early days of Payson he was presiding Elder over one of the districts of the town; filled positions in the city council; was city treasurer for many years, and was identified with all the public business of the town through all his long life, and won the respect of his fellow citizens, and his numerous acquaintances throughout the State. The funeral services will be held at the Payson tabernacle on Sunday next at 1:20 p.m
