Dwaine G. Duncan, age 94, of Coon Rapids passed away Friday, March 6, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines surrounded by his family.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids with Fr. Andrew Hoffman as Celebrant assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids after 4:00 P.M. on Monday where there will be a Rosary at 4:30 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. by Annunciation Parish. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Music for the Mass will be by Faye Seidl and the Annunciation Choir. Lector for the Mass will be Andrea Duncan. Gift bearers will be Samantha Lenz, Andrea Duncan, and Traci Gafford. Casket bearers will be Chase Duncan, Andrew Gafford, Mike Duncan, Andy Duncan, Mark Duncan, and Nathan Lenz. Burial will be in the Coon Rapids Cemetery with military honors by the Coon Rapids American Legion and the Iowa National Guard. Born on January 15, 1921 south of Coon Rapids on his family's farm, he was the son of George and May (Trullinger) Duncan. He went to school at Annunciation Catholic School for eight years and then attended Coon Rapids Public High School and graduated in 1939. Dwaine was raised and worked on his family's farm until he entered the United States Army in 1943 to serve in World War II. He served three years, two of which were in the European Theater of Operations. During his tour of Europe he served in England, France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxemborg. After his return from the war, Dwaine married Norma Jean Cornelius in February of 1947. He farmed with his brother south of Coon Rapids and near Dedham for several years. He then operated the Coon Rapids DX Gas Station before working for the City of Coon Rapids for 16 years as Street Superintendant. In retirement Dwaine loved to garden, travel, woodworking, and attending WWII reunions. He toured Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and he also traveled to Washington D.C. on an honor flight. He enjoyed sharing many of these activities with his special friend Lois.
Dwaine is survived by two daughters: Kathy Duncan of Benbrook, TX and Patty Lenz and her husband Mark of Sioux Falls, SD; four sons: Larry Duncan and his wife Terrie of Windsor, IL, Randy Duncan of Bettendorf, IA, Kevin Duncan and wife Kathy of Marshalltown, IA, and Billy Duncan and his wife Cora of Grimes, IA; thirteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; his special friend Lois Bowman of Coon Rapids; two sisters: Jean Williamson of Littleton, CO, and Geraldine Raffertery of Coon Rapids; a brother-in-law Don Cornelius and his wife Norma of Ames, IA; a sister-in-law Freda Hall and her husband Bill of Ankeny, IA; and several nieces and nephews and many good friends.
Dwaine was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Norma J. Duncan in1976, a daughter Diane Duncan in 2014, a son Maurice Duncan in 1992, a grandson Brandon in 2004, a brother Merle Duncan and a sister Dorothy Duncan.
