- Edward H. "Ed" Gilbert, 83, went to be with the Lord on December 7, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 12, 2005, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid. Burial will follow at Dalander Cemetery, northwest of Madrid, with military honors conducted by the V.F.W. Post #5060.
He was born December 24, 1921 in Viola Township near Audubon, Iowa to Charles and Gertrude (Trullinger) Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was a graduate of Audubon High School, and attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he played football and was a member of the Kappa Theta Psi fraternity. He also attended Dennison University in Granville, Ohio for Officers Training School. Mr. Gilbert was a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, and served in the Pacific theater during World War II as well as serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Gilbert married his college sweetheart Elinor Sundberg of Madrid on March 9, 1945. They made their home in Madrid, Iowa, where they owned and operated Sundberg Floor Covering until their retirement in 1978. To this union was born three children, Kathleen, Caroline and Criss.
Mr. Gilbert gave generously of his time to his church and community. He served multiple terms on the congregational council of St. John's Lutheran Church, and served on the Board of Directors of the Madrid Homes serving as board president for two years. He also served several terms on the Madrid City Council. For many years, he served as Cub master, and then as Scoutmaster to pack and troop 150 of Madrid. He was also active as a Camp Fire do-dad.
He was a life member of VFW Post 5060. He served on the Madrid Fire department for many years, and was a member of the Iowa Floor Covering Club, serving as their president for two years.
Following their retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert managed the club house at the Woodward Golf and Country Club for four years. During his retirement, Mr. Gilbert served on the Boone County Veterans Affairs Board, as well as serving several years on the Older Iowan's legislature.
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert enjoyed traveling and participated in multiple Elderhostels. He had a life-long passion for cooking, and a special interest in barbecuing. He enjoyed playing golf and working with stained glass, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Elinor Gilbert of Madrid; two daughters, Kathleen Warren and her husband Bill of Goldfield, IA, and Caroline Woollums of Madrid; one son, Criss Gilbert of Eugene, OR; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Darrell "Pee Wee" Gilbert and his wife Mardell of Audubon; two sisters, Jeanette Lantz and her husband Mickey of Colville, WA, and Mary Young of Des Moines; and a host of friends. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and a beloved family friend, Ted Wesenberg.
The family of Mr. Gilbert wishes to publicly thank the nursing staff of Iowa Methodist Medical Center, the nursing staff of The Madrid Homes, Dr. David Vittetoe, Dr. Brad Archer and Dr. Roger Harvey. Also most generous thanks to Reverend Carla Werre of the Madrid Homes and Reverend Marcus Badgley of St. John's Lutheran Church, Madrid, Iowa, for their unfailing love, prayers and support during Mr. Gilbert's lengthy illness.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 11, at Sundberg- Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid. Memorial donations may be sent to either the A.C.T.S. Fund (Assistance with Compassion to Seniors) in care of the Madrid Home or to St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid.
