  • Notes
    • In 1832, John's grandfather Samuel, his parents Johannes and Barbara left Germany to come to America. They died aboard ship, probably of cholera. There is no information as to whether Johannes's 3 brothers sailed with them, if they died, or what happened to them.
John worked in hotels in Delaware, Ohio and Marion, Ohio after coming to the area.
John, wives, and infant children are buried in Zion Cemetery, Richland Township.
John died in a sand cave-in on 8/21/1878. 7/9/98 Information from 1978 letter from Eva:
Johannes came to America with an aunt and uncle, Jakob and Magdalene Seiter, along with their children. Johannes helped, with uncle to unload the boat to pay for passage.
Left Deitenhausen on May 3, 1830. Stayed in Le Harve for 9 days, then sailed from Le Havre on June 9, 1830, landing in New York on 7/31/1830.

They had planned to settle near Cleveland with a sister and brother in law of Mrs. Seiters. However, they apparently changed their minds and moved south to Richland Township where Jakob and his family settled.

The Marion Daily Star Aug 22 1878
Mr John Seiter, living six miles south-east of this place while loading sand for his new house, at Fishe's sand bank on the Prospect Pike, the bank caved in and caught him and as he ws alone he was confined about four hours. He was discovered by two girls, who gave the alarm, he was alive when taken out, but died at one o'clock this morning. Mr. Seiter is about 70 years old, a half-brother of Samuel Seiter of this place and was one of Marion county's old stand-by's. He will be buried tomorrow Aug 23, 1878 at 10 o'clock at Zion's church near where he lived. He came to this country about the year 1843 or 44 and was hostler for Si Mann but since that time has accumulated much of this world's goods.
