    • Danville - Theodore Newton "Ted" Slayton Jr., 71, of Danville passed away at 7:40 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2017 at the VA Illiana Healthcare System in Danville.

      Ted was born on September 13, 1946 in Danville, IL. He was the son of Theodore and Betty (Gustafson) Slayton. He will be missed by many family and friends. Surviving family members include: longtime companion, Becky Engel of Danville; his mother, Betty Slayton of Danville; one son, Todd Slayton of Danville; two sisters, Kathy (Charlie) Coulter of La Quinta, CA and Susan (Mark) Bounds of Danville, several aunts, uncles and cousins as well as half sisters Sandy (Kenny) Zorns and Shelley (Randy) Alpers. Ted was preceded in death by his father, Ted and infant brother, Michael Todd.

      Ted graduated from Danville High School in 1964 and attended Danville Jr. College before entering the service. Ted was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. Serving during Vietnam, he was stationed in the Philippines and guarded the munitions for Vietnam with his beloved German Shepherd, Ajax. Ted retired from Bunge Milling in 2008, where he worked for 38 years. Ted was a member of the American Legion Post 210 in Danville and a passionate Illini fan.

      He was a talented and avid golfer, winning many local tournaments. He caddied for his brother-in-law in the PGA Bob Hope Classic in La Quinta, Ca. and played many of the courses played by the PGA professionals. A highlight was chatting with Arnold Palmer in the locker room at La Quinta Country Club. He had many great memories of his rounds of golf with friends at Vermillion Hills/Wolf Creek Country Club. Ted's family would like to thank Dr. Elliott and staff at Palliative Care VA Illiana Health Care for their comfort, care, and compassion. Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear.

      Visitation 12 noon - 1:30 pm Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at the VA Illiana Health Care System Protestant Chapel in Danville. Burial in the Danville National Cemetery. The Robison Chapel in Catlin is handling service details. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made the VA Illiana Health Care System/PAL Funds, in c/o Voluntary Systems, 1900 E Main St. Danville, IL, 61832. On-line condolences at www.robisonchapel.com.
