    • Dr. Richard Johnston Waugh, of Pulaski, native of Oldtown near Galax, and retired Pulaski dentist, died at Wytheville hospital Monday night, December 26, 1960. Death followed a lengthy illness. Dr. Waugh was a son of the late Capt. John Blair Waugh and wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Perkins Waugh. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Letty Trolinger Waugh, of Pulaski, whom he married November 26, 1919; two daughters, Mrs. John F. Bradley, Nyack, NY, and Mrs. E.W. Dudley, Alexandria one brother, B. Waugh, Galax; two nephews, Charles Richard Waugh and John Blair Waugh, both of Galax, and five grandchildren, Letty Carter Dudley, Waller Dudley and Luther Dudley, all of Alexandria, and Mary T. Bradley and John Bradley, Jr., both of Nyack, NY. Born June 10, 1894, Dr. Waugh was 66 years of age at the time of his death. Dr. Waugh was also a brother of the late Charles P. Waugh, of Galax, and was a first cousin of the late Swift Waugh, of Galax. His father, the late Capt. Waugh, who died December 7, 1934, at his home in Galax on West Stuart Drive where Mrs. Charles P. Waugh now resides, was one of the founders of Galax. Dr. R.J. Waugh started his retirement about ten years previous to his death and was a leading figure in the civic, commercial and industrial life of Galax in 1904 moving his business here from Blair (now Cliffview). His store was among the first, business houses created here. His second son, Dan Blair Waugh, and two sons, John Blair and Charles Richard Waugh, still operate a store, Dan B Waugh & Co. -- on the site of the old Waugh's Department Store, on the corner of South Main and East Grayson Streets in Galax. For more than 135 successive years, one or more members of the Waugh family have been merchants in this community. Enlisting in the Army of the Confederate States of America at the age of 19, Capt. Waugh commanded the 61st Regiment during the four years of the Civil War. His regiment helped make history in the famed battle of Missionary Ridge near Chattanooga, TN, and many other hard battles of that great conflict. Dr. Waugh received his D.D.S. degree in 1918 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, Pulaski, and a life member of the American Dental Association and the Southwest Virginia Dental Society. He was member of the Pulaski Elks Lodge. Dr. Waugh practiced dentistry in Pulaski for 41 years. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home in Pulaski, where the body rested prior to the services. The Rev. Curtis L. Warner, pastor of the First Methodist Church, Pulaski, conducted the service. Interment was in Oakwood cemetery, Pulaski.
