- Karen M. DRULINER Lampinen
LA CROSSE/PHILIPPINES/DAMASCUS, Ore. - Karen died peacefully at her home in Damascus on Dec. 9, 2008, with her family at her side, ending her 4½-year battle with cancer. Her strong belief and love of God, family and extended church family helped her through all her struggles. She continued to lead Bible study groups, Mom's support groups and play flute with the church orchestra until two weeks before her death.
She was born Jan. 14, 1948, in La Crosse to Mary M. (Hussa) and Howard Druliner. Karen was a 1966 graduate of La Crosse Central High School and a 1970 graduate of Laurence University in Appleton, Wis. After four years of employment with Laurence University in London, England, as assistant to the administrator and head residence counselor, Karen attended All Nations Christian College in England, graduating in 1976. This was the beginning of a 32-year career as a missionary for OMF International in the Philippines, for which she was sponsored by Gold Hills Church of Ware, England. Karen met the love of her life, David Lampinen, while teaching English and Tagalog to Philippinos and missionaries.
Karen and David were married in the Philippines on Jan. 9, 1988, and continued to reside there until 2003. Karen and David started several missionary churches in the Philippines during their 15 years together there. In 2003 they returned to the states for medical care of their son, Ben, diagnosed with leukemia.
In her adult years, Karen became a great lover of flowers and gardening, having by far the most beautiful flower and vegetable garden in the area according to friends in Oregon.
A memorial service was held Dec. 13 in Damascus at Damascus Community Church with burial in National Cemetery.
Karen is survived by her husband, David Lampinen, and son, Wilbert Lampinen of Damascus; her brother, Bill (Renee) Druliner of Holmen; nephew, Bill (Jessica) Druliner of Milwaukee; a great-niece and nephew; numerous cousins; and friends worldwide.
Karen was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; son, Ben; uncles, Maurice, Emil and Owen Hussa; aunts, Lillian and Gretchen Hussa; and cousin, Ann Quirk.
A memorial service celebrating Karen's life will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 17 at North Presbyterian Church in La Crosse. Pastor Scott Skogen will officiate.
