- Reaves Fred Nahwooksy
ACCOKEEK, Md. Funeral for former Indiahoma resident, Reaves FredNahwooksy, 53, Accokeek, Md., will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at ComancheNation Funeral Home with Milton Noel and Susan Nahwooksy, pastor,officiating.
Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Nahwooksy died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, in Johnson City, Tenn.
Graveside service will be at Crosswinds Ranch.
He was born Nov. 29, 1955, in Lawton, at Kiowa Indian Hospital, toClydia Trolinder Glory and Reaves Fred Nahwooks. He graduated fromNorthwestern High School in Hyattsville, Md., in 1974. He attended theUniversity of Oklahoma and University of Maryland, graduating in 1988with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Government and Politics. He wasa Comanche Nation Tribal member and was employed as senior adviser tothe associate director of museum programs for the National Museum ofthe American Indian, Smithsonian Institution. He held many otherpositions during his tenure at the Smithsonian. Other work experienceincluded museum development work for the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin,the Karuk Tribe of California, and the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma. Hehad also been director of the Institute of American Indian Arts Museumin Santa Fe, executive director of Atlatl, Inc. in Phoenix, andexecutive director of Red Earth, Inc, in Oklahoma City. He had workedas the Technical Director of the Smithsonian's Festival of AmericanFolklife. In his various roles he had been involved in developingpublications, exhibitions, public programs, grant writing, andfundraising.
Survivors include his mother, Clydia, of Indiahoma; a sister andbrother-in-law, Margaret and Jonathan Lovejoy, Lawton; a sister, SusanNahwooksy, Indiahoma; two sons: Reaves Nicholas and John Fred, adaughter, Eleni Rose Manos, and their mother, Sue Manos, all ofFredrick, Md.; fiancee, Valerie Sheppard; two nephews: Robert Henryand Becky Nahwooksy and Clyde Reaves Nahwooksy.
He was preceded in death by his father, the Rev. Dr. Reaves Nahwooks;and his grandparents.
