- MIDLAND Jack Meredith Murphy, age 86, of Midland, passed away Monday, November 12, 2007, at Midland Memorial Hospital.
Jack was born August 7, 1921, in Nowata, Oklahoma, to Everett Clarence Murphy and Allie Merle Trolinger Murphy. Raised and educated in Odessa, Texas, he attended Odessa High School.
Jack married Joyce LaNell Witt of Ballinger, Texas, on June 2, 1950, in Sterling City, Texas. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will always be remembered for his love of animals, great sense of humor, smile and the unconditional love he gave his wife of 57 years, sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren.
Jack was a member of First Baptist Church. He proudly served his country from 1942 to 1943 in the U.S. Army Air Force and was a member of the American Legion No. 19. Jack, an auto mechanic, worked for Mackey Motor Company from 1941 to 1981. Then, he owned Jack Murphy's Garage from 1981 until his retirement in 1996. He found countless hours of joy working on cars and tinkering in his garage.
Jack was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother, James Trolinger Murphy.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce LaNell Murphy; three sons, Jack M. "J.M." Murphy, Jr. and wife, Lynn Ashton Murphy of Midland; James Randy Murphy of Garland, Texas; John Larry Murphy and wife, Roxanne Waddill Murphy of Midland; four grandchildren, Rebecca "Becki" Murphy, Jack M. "J" Murphy, III, and wife, Danette Whittle Murphy, Meredith Anne Murphy, and Mitchell Young Murphy, all of Midland.
The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Thursday, November 15, 2007, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2007, in the Worship Center of First Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Dyer, Rev. David Johnson and Rev. Bob Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park North. Pallbearers will be Jack M. "J" Murphy, III, Mack McClelland, Scott Bailey, Ronnie Williams, Dr. Morgan Brown, Jim Rogers, Dean Rippetoe, Wilburn Long, and Jim Henry.
Jack will be greatly missed by his family and countless number of friends.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, Hospice of Midland and First Baptist Church of Midland.
