- Virginia M. Felton died peacefully on Monday, August 11, 2014 in Portland, Oregon, with her youngest niece at her side.
Virginia was born on June 24, 1922 in Fort Collins, CO and soon thereafter her family moved to Cheyenne, WY. At the age of 17 she made a trip to Oregon. Believing she had found Heaven, she resolved to make this beautiful state her home. Virginia married Judge Joseph Felton on Valentines Day. Together they enjoyed Salem, Oregon as their life long home.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Joseph Felton, and her two brothers, Howard and James McAllister. She is survived by her four nieces, Sharon, Pamela, Marilyn and Leslie McAllister, and her stepson Bill Schultz.
Virginia shared a multitude of talents with us. She was an accomplished painter, showing and selling her artwork at galleries in Lincoln City and elsewhere in Oregon. Her family continues to treasure the artwork she gifted to each of them. She was also a gardener, chef, extraordinary seamstress, bridal consultant and musician. Her nieces will always remember her dry humor and twinkling eyes.
In 1985, Virginia began the hugely successful work to restore the Historic Salem Pioneer Cemetery, located just a few blocks from her Salem home. The cemetery had suffered from years of neglect. Virginia had the vision for the restoration and maintenance that has allowed the Pioneer Cemetery to once again be a historical resource for the Salem community.
A private family remembrance service will be held at Mt. Crest Abbey Mausoleum. Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home.
Donations or volunteer efforts to support Friends of Pioneer Cemetery will honor and celebrate Virginia Felton's life.
