OCALA - A former Kwik King Food Stores Inc. director of operations, accused of bilking the company out of $5,000 from a fund created for charities, was arrested and charged with two counts of grand theft Wednesday.
According to a Sheriff's Office report, Robert M. Trullender, 46, was taken into custody at the Marion County Jail, where he was released the same day in lieu of $4,000 bail.
Officials contend that Trullender stole $2,500 in 2006 and the same amount this year from a checking account established by the company for its program to support local charities. Monies used to fund the program, created in early 2006, came from things such as entry fees to company-organized golf tournaments and raffles. Trullender was in charge of the program.
While it is not known what charities were beneficiaries of the program, the sheriff's report states that the 2007 proceeds were possibly intended for the Boy Scouts.
Contacted by the Star-Banner on Thursday, Trullender refused comment.
Trullender was terminated in late April, reportedly because his position was eliminated. The arrest report notes that around the time of his firing, Trullender contacted Debra Marty, a Kwik King district supervisor, and asked her to give him $500 from monies the company received from its March 12 golf tournament at Golden Ocala.
Marty, finding the request suspicious, reported it to another employee, and Kwik King officials, with the assistance of Leo Smith Investigations, checked the charity account. Smith, a former Marion County sheriff's deputy, found that $5,000 was never deposited into the account.
Trullender reportedly visited Kwik King owner Bill Tuck last month at his home, bearing an envelope containing $2,500. Trullender reportedly told Tuck he forgot he had the money.
On July 10, Smith turned over information about the case to sheriff's detectives, who launched an investigation. Officials interviewed Marty, who told them she gave both of the $2,500 amounts to Trullender, believing the funds would be deposited to the charity account. Another employee, Wendy Norton, confirmed that the cash was given to Trullender.
Among the donors interviewed by detectives was Leslie Scott, a representative of Royal Cup Coffee, who said his company had provided money for the golf tournament, believing that proceeds would go to charitable organizations.
Detectives contacted Trullender, who told them he had an attorney. Officials spoke to Jorge Colon by telephone, who said his client wasn't making any statements. Sheriff's officials indicated that Trullender may be in the process of changing attorneys.
Neither Tuck nor Colon could be reached by the Star-Banner for comment.
