Arthur Eugene Hill, 82, Lone Tree, died Friday, August 15, 2003, at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City, after a short illness.
Graveside services are 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, at the Lone Tree Cemetery. Loren Yoder will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Lone Tree American Legion Post No. 457.
There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. The Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home, Lone Tree, is handling the arrangements.
Mr. Hill was born on October 6, 1920, in Marion, the son of Edwin and Florence (Tomlinson) Hill. He married Coral Rose Cook in 1948.
He graduated from Center High School near Kalona in 1939, having played basketball and acting in many plays.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II where he served as a combat medic, rifleman and cook in the 109th Medical Battalion, 39th (Red Bull) Division. In North Africa, he took part in the Invasion of Algiers and the battles of Kasserine Pass, Faid Pass and Hill 609, where he was severely wounded. He later landed in Italy at the Battle for Salerno and also served in the battles of Monte Cassino, Anzio, San Pietro, where he was again wounded, and two crossings of the Volturno River under fire, eventually reaching Rome. The Army awarded him four Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.
He was a police officer in Washington, and the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He was also the town marshall of Lone Tree. Later he founded Hill's Construction. He was a former mayor of Lone Tree, a member of the Lone Tree American Legion Post No. 457 and a former member of the Riverside Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Steven of Lone Tree, Tim of Iowa City, and Daniel of Los Angeles; three grandchildren, Gena, Heather, and Christin; and three great-grandchildren, Keighlea, Jonathon, and Colton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ed, Herbert, and James; and two sisters, Margaret and Lillian.
