- Ella Wimmer was the third child of James E. and Margaret Shelley. Her parents had been called by Brigham Young in 1876 to go to Arizona to help make settlements along the Little Colorado River. They first settled at Allen's Camp, later called St. Joseph. After living the United Order for a few years, the camp broke up and George E. moved his family to Heber, Az where he raised cattle. He also had the Post Office in one corner of his living room. Ellie learned to work hard, was an excellent seamstress and cook. She also loved to ride horses and sometimes helped her father in the fields. When Ellie was 21, she met a fine looking young man who was contracted to run the mail to Heber. Since the Post Office was in the Shelley home she had a chance to get acquainted with Harvey Wimmer. He soon won Ellie's heart and they were married Oct 8, 1903 in Salt Lake City. They made their home in Joseph City. They had 4 children and Ella spent her time taking care of her husband and children. She also provided food for the tramps who jumped off the freight trains. She was only 40 years old when her husband died with a kidney disease. Her oldest child, Lawrence was just 17 when his father died. He and Elmer (15) would hoe weeds, or cut corn to help sustain the family. Ella took in washing and ironing and worked as a janitor at the church and school with help from her children. Elmer developed kidney disease and passed away just 2 weeks before his mother who had a stroke and died on November 16, 1941 at the age of 60.
