    • Fred Wayne Schultz, 76, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, at the Royal Plaza in Lewiston. Both of his parents, Fred and Cecil Schultz, both of his brothers, James and Alan Schultz, and his sister, Sybil Schultz, passed before Wayne. An early marriage to Helen Swett ended in divorce.

Wayne died from complications of his lifelong battle with Friedreich's ataxia, a rare hereditary neurological disease that also claimed his sister, Sybil. This disease causes progressive damage to the nervous system, making walking and other motor functions increasingly difficult. It does not, however, affect the intellect, and Wayne was known for his intelligence and wit. Wayne faced this disease with great courage, and from early childhood on demanded to be treated like anyone else, with no special accommodations for his disability.

He leaves behind four nieces, Sharon Demarte, of Seattle; Linda Seph, of Athol, Idaho; Deanna Zagelow of Athol; and Janice Deesten of Miles City, Mont.; and many close friends.

Born and raised in Moscow, he helped his father run the family farm north of Moscow, where he operated tractors, trucks and raised cattle as a member of Future Farmers of America. Wayne cut his teeth on Caterpillar tracks. Riding a bicycle at age 6 was a challenge he eventually mastered. And not one to let his health issues interfere with an active lifestyle, he went through his share of motorcycles, snow machines, hot rod pickup trucks, boats and various high-performance sports cars. The only thing that slowed him down for a while was when he flipped his four-wheeler over backward and broke his leg in two places. Wayne's stubbornness and "can-do" attitude was legendary and allowed him to accomplish many things that were seemingly beyond his capability. He especially loved his 42-foot motor home, in which he spent many happy hours traveling and camping throughout the United States.

Wayne and lifelong friends Alan Jones and Jerry Hylton were known as "The Three Musketeers" of Mountain View Road.

He attended the University of Idaho and graduated with a degree in business administration. He went to work for an accounting firm in the Portland, Ore., area but returned to Lewiston shortly thereafter to go to work for Presnell Gage.

Wayne Schultz joined Presnell Gage as a partner in November of 1965. He specialized in taxation and fulfilled the role as tax partner for several years. He spent his career helping clients with their tax and accounting needs

Wayne's very close friends, Ron and Lani Rose and Irv and Ruth Caufield, provided significant amounts of care for him during the last several years.

Per his request, there will be no memorial service but donations may be made to the University of Idaho.

Many thanks to Alan and Jerry for their kind words about our friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
