  Mary B. Sprague was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Long Sprague. She was first married was to Jacob Jackson Monroe in the fall of 1839. The Monroes lived in Ohio. Jacob Monroe died as the result of a fall from a horse on 14 August 1840, 5 months before the birth of his only child, Harriett Monroe.
