BEACON: Mendocino, Mendocino, CA, 31 Dec 1887 [Saturday]:
Mrs Christina Perry died at her residence in this place on Thursday [29 Dec 1887] 3:20 PM after a severe illness of more than four months. During this time she has suffered excruciatingly from neuralgia in the right foot and leg, being in torture almost constantly night and day, but bearing her affliction with unusual fortitude for a woman of her age.
Mrs Perry was born in the State of Pennsylvania May 1809, thus at her death was in her seventy-ninth year. She went with her parents when quite young to the State of Virginia. Coming to the years of womanhood, she married and became the mother of three children [Stephen Kelch b 1828, Jemima Kelch b 1829, Phillip Kelch b Mar 1833]. Afterwards being left a widow, she moved to Marietta, State of Ohio, in 1839, which place was her home about 19 years [see 1850 census]. While there she was married the second time [to Seth Perry] and two more children [Ira Perry b 1841, Luna Perry b 1837] were given her - one of whom was Ira C Perry, now a resident of Mendocino, and guardian of his mother for many years. From Ohio Mrs Perry with her husband and children moved to Hannibal, MO, USA, in the spring of 1861. There her second husband [Seth] died. From MO, USA they went to Chicago, IL, and remained five years; and in the fall of 1876 [sb 1867] came to CA, USA, arriving in San Francisco Dec 15 1867, where she met her son Ira C who had come to this state some time before. [US Census 1860 shows him still at Hannibal MO with his mother; in 1870 at Bodega CA.] Mrs. Perry?s first home in CA, USA was at Howard Station, Sonoma county, with her son Ira C, her adopted son James Hiram Charles [son of dau Jemima (Kelch)], and one daughter-in-law. There the family resided until Dec 1880 when they moved to Mendocino, which has been their home since that time.
For the greater part of Mrs Perry?s life, she has sustained a relationship to some religious persuasion. First being identified with the Universalist, then with the Baptist, and since her residence in Mendocino, she has been connected with the Presbyterian Church up to the time of her death. Mrs Perry evinced great veneration for her Savior and found Him her greatest comforter for many years. During her illness, her faith was unflagging and her confidence strengthened in Him, who gave her so much well-grounded hope. She longed for many weeks to go to that land which has no infirmities nor pains, but where all is peace and rest, to which without a struggle or sign of torture, she quietly and peacefully passed on Thursday afternoon. Her bereaved children and relations have the sympathy of the community where they are so well known. May their mother?s Saviour be their Saviour, and her heaven their heaven
The funeral of the deceased took place yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o?clock P.M. from the residence of Ira C. Perry, the remains being interred in Evergreen Cemetery, Rev. J.P. Rich, officiating.
