  	Runa is a brother to Abel, John Prentiss, Allen, Mary Ethel, Aaron, and Orilla Mattoon. He moved with his parents and siblings to the Toledo, Ohio area when he was four years old. In 1836 they moved to Indiana, and then in May1847 he started across the plains with ox teams to Oregon with his father, three brothers and four sisters with their families. They arrived about the first of November 1847, settling near Oregon City. In 1849 he went to the gold fields in California. When he returned to Oregon he took a donation claim on Clear Creek, 12 miles east of Oregon City. He married Eliza A. Trullinger in 1852. Their child is Albert R. Mattoon. They moved to Looking Glass valley in Douglas county, Oregon in 1888. The Plain Dealer, Roseburg, Douglas, Oregon, 10 February 1898
