  • Notes
    • Growing up I thought my grand father had three sisters: Elsie Stout (10December1892-1980, Chelten Hill Cemetery) Reenie (Irene Craig (1909-2000) buried in the Rock Plot with infant Ruth Jean 1933) and Sis (Ethel Hagan (1913-1986) buried in the Fernwood Mausoleum next to her daughter Dorothy Lilley 1931-1994).
Initially I tried to find Ernest before I switched to his German name Ernst (1872-10December 1950). Found the whole family. mother Nellie Osell (1874-27 February 1920) Nellie Robertson (3November 1894-1921), Mary Carlisle (1896-1963), Ernest, Jr. (1898-1902) Edward 3November 1901-27February 1964)), Harry (1905-1915), George (1907-1913), Florence Martha (1908-1908), Walter (1910-10December1972) and Mrytle Hughes (1919-2003).
In Ernest's Last Will & Testament (now 56 years) 8October 1928, he leaves $1.00 to Elsie (now 36 years), Irene (now 19), Ethel (now 15) and Walter (now 18). The balance of his estate to "my beloved son Edward (now married at 25) fo(r) his unfailing love and respect". Of course, there was no estate. His funeral expenses were $500 and Edward paid $371 on 2January 1951. Dead are Nellie, Ernest Jr, Harry, George and Florence.
Interesting thought that he sent Mary (now 31) a photo of the grave 30April 1927 with this written on the back "For Mary from her father. I am taking care of Mom's resting place. The flag was on her grave". Eighteen months later he never mentions her in the will. Probably because she was in Honolulu, Hawaii from June1928. Only a guess.rnst Eduard 3Mar1872 emigrated to US in 1890 and his name changed to Ernest. Married Nellie Osell (b: Apr1874) in 1891.Emigrated in 1888 from England and then again curiously, she emigrated from England in 1894 on the British Princess ship with 2 year old Elsie in hand, 6pounds in her pocket. And surname Roch. And perhaps Nellie in the womb. Settled at 4651 Meredith St., Philadelphia. And later N.5th St. They had twelve children in total. See tombstone Fernwood Cemetery . Lot473 Section 50.
      Children and birth year are:
Elsie (Truttenger) (10Dec1892). Purchased the plot in Fernwood when her mother died.
Nellie (Robinson) (Nov 3, 1894) two mädchen (girls) Nellie, 19 months and Adelaide, 6 years. Married to Raymond 1912. See photo of Nellie the third and Adelaide.
Mary (Carlisle) (Jul1896). Adopted Mrytle and moved to South Carolina with her husband William stationed at Paris Island.
Ernest, Jr. born 26Apr1898, died 19Feb1902. Pneumonia. 4646 Meredith St.
Edward Roch (3Nov1901 U of P Hospital, d. 27Feb1964). Notice the Americanization of "Eduard". He changed the surname to Rock.
Florentine Martha 5Apr1908-28Jul1908, cholera. 3948 Wallace St., Blockley Baptist Cemetery. Irene 12Jun1909-5Oct2000. Had a son Joseph Craig, wife Muriel, daughter Barbara.
      Walter Roch (1911).
      Ethel (1914).
      Mrytle (1920).
      Source: 1920 Census.
In the 1910 Census there was also Harry (1906) and George (25Jan1907 -15Feb1913 pneumonia, Fernwood Cemetery).
Nellie died in 1920 possibly as a result of childbirth with Mrytle. She was 46. Ernest outlived her by thirty years. He was a waiter at FairAcres Hospital in Lima, Pa. And lived at the Darby Mission when he died, 10Dec1950 at 78. He bought a plot at Fernwood Cemetery in Lansdowne when Nellie died. Now buried there besides them are his son, Edward A. Rock and his wife Teresa, , his daughter Irene, his grandson Edward A. Rock, Jr. and his wife Barbara. (Need to fact check).
On Ernest's shift, after four generations, Ernst changed to Ernest, Eduard became Americanized and the fourth and last "Ernst Eduard" disappeared as a family name after Ernest, Jr's. death in Feb1902. Replaced by Edward for three generations. A combined run of 7 generations 1826-1949, 123 years.

      Handwritten letter to:
      Mr. Edward Rock
      6027 Upland Street
      Philadelphia Pa
      "Saturday, September 15, 1928
I herewith authorize my son, Edward Rock, to take charge of all my affairs, at the time of my death. He will attend to my burial, also collect all insurance. He inherits anything and everything belonging to me, whatever it might be. There will be no accounting on his part. God is my witness.
      Ernest Roch"
      826 N. 46th St. Philadelphia
Ernest took the newspaper, cut out the date in several spots and taped the dates on the letter and sealed the envelope that way.

      Later typed:
"Last Will & Testament of Ernest Roch
In the event of my death it is my wish that the following bequests and provisions, be carried out in detail, to wit:-
#1, I do give and bequeath to my daughters, Elsie, Irene and Ethel, the sum of One (1.00) dollar, each and separately
#2, I do give and bequeath to my son, Walter, the sum of one (1.00) dollar.
#3, I do give and bequeath the balance of my estate, both personal and real, after the above listed bequests have been deducted, to my beloved son, Edward, for his unfailing love and respect.
      Signed, Ernest Roch.
