22776 | U-32 routs Burr and Burton By TOM HERZIG TIMES ARGUS CORRESPONDENT EAST MONTPELIER - U-32 backs Elias LaCount and Jesse Burke scored three touchdowns apiece and combined for 478 yards on the ground as the Raiders crushed Burr and Burton Academy 53-8 Friday. The Bulldogs' passing game fared no better than their defensive line. U-32 intercepted seven passes, including three by junior Paul Trollinger. Anticipating that they would need all the points they could muster, Burr and Burton opened the game with an onside kick, which the Raiders recovered. Burke followed pulling guard Jacob Beling around right end on the first play from scrimmage and swung into the end zone untouched. Beling kicked the PAT and after 23 seconds, U-32 led 7-0. Things went downhill from there for the visitors. Burr and Burton made it to the Raiders 7-yard-line, helped by quar terback Patrick Jordan's 17-yard slant to Nick Perni and Jake Coyle's 8-yard gain, before U-32's John Helme broke up a pass in the end zone. A dropped pass on fourth and goal turned the ball over. Six plays later, Raiders quarterback Logan Farrell found Helme at the corner of the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown strike and the rout was on. "We're in a waiting game now," Raiders coach Mike Law said, referring to U-32's bid to make its 13th consecutive playoff appearance. "We have to win at home against Mount Mansfield next Friday and then wait and see what happens." U-32 led 25-0 at the half. Dacota Carrier, Helme (a leaping backhanded grab), Farrell (at the goal line) and Trollinger each had an interception before the break, and LaCount and Burke returned to the end zone. U-32 rushed for 326 yards and picked up 14 first downs to four for Burr and Burton. Trollinger's second interception set up U-32's first touchdown of the second half, which came on a 69-yard run by LaCount. Beling made each of his last four PATs. Nash Lancaster scored the Bulldogs' lone touchdown from 15 yards out with seven seconds left in the third quarter. A shovel pass from Jake Stalcup to Lancaster was good for a two-point conversion. FarrelPs lone pass was the touchdown strike to Helme. Jordan was 8-of-18 for 60 yards for the Bulldogs, while being intercepted four times. Stalcup went 2-for-8 for 30 yards and had three throws picked off. U-32 improved its record to 6-2. Burr and Burton fell to 2-6. "LaCount was hard to catch tonight," Law said. "He runs around people and Burke runs through them. Burke and Tyler Tetreault made a lot of tackles. Beling made things happen for the backs. He's gets down the field and he's looking for people. Defensively, we didn't give them anything." (At least one living or private individual is linked to this item - Details withheld.) |
