      World War Two
      Dec 7th, 1941 - Sept 2, 1945
As "Old Glory" was being raised on the mountain top, two South Bay men lay fallen on the slopes of Mt. Suribachi having just given the ultimate gift to their country. The obligation to Never Forget the gift of those two men and 82 other South Bay residents is the purpose of this page and in essence this web site.
The images and information on this page would not have been possible without the efforts of John L. Proudfoot, former Post 184 Adjutant Service Officer. After the poignant process of gathering these images and dates, a display was dedicated on May 13th, 1946. It can still be view at the Post. [Note: John Proudfoot's son is in this collection.]
We certainly realize other South Bay Residents gave this most precious of gifts and we will gladly add their names when we receive the information.

Location: Vianden, Germany Point Of Departure: Station A-72
Awards: Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart

Constituted as 397th Bombardment Group (Medium) on March 20, 1943. Activated on April 20, 1943. Trained with B-26's. Moved to RAF Gosfield England, March-April 1944, and assigned to Ninth Air Force , however. no sooner had they arrived than they were moved on to RAF Rivenhall . The group's identification marking was a yellow diagonal band across both sides of the vertical tailplane.
Early in August, officially on the 5th, the 397th transferred from Rivenhall to RAF Hurn in Hampshire, to give the Marauders a better radius of action as the break-out of the Allied forces from the Normandy beachhead meant that potential targets were receding.

Remember on Memorial Day the Oregon State Phi Delts who gave all.
