GAS CITY — Charles W. Hewitt, 87, died early Wednesday, January 30,2013 in his residence. He was born in Converse, Indiana to the lateOren and Goldie (Drollinger) Hewitt. He married Betty L. Sailors onJuly 14, 1944. She survives. Charles and Betty wintered for the past19 years in Okeechobee, Florida.
Charles was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran, serving from 1944 to1946. He served in the 255th Infantry Regiment, 63rd Division as aMortar Gunner receiving a Bronze Star for action on the Siegfried Linein Germany.
Upon discharge from the Army, Charles returned to Marion in 1955 tobegin working at the Marion General Motors Plant (Fisher Body), wherehe stayed until his retirement in October of 1986. Charles waschairman of Local 977 U.A.W. Retirees for 25 years and was a member oftheir Executive Committee. He was a member of the GM Sympathy Club andone of the founders of GM Care and Share program. Charles gave a lotof time and effort into raising funds, organizing and participating inthe food distribution for Care and Share since it began in 1983. Healso worked with the U.A.W. Food Bank. In addition to his involvementwith Care and Share, he currently established a store with the GeneralMotors plant which provides funds for retiree activities. He was amember of the Jonesboro American Legion and Masonic Lodge. Charles washonored by being awarded a Key to the City of Marion in 2008 and toGas City in 2012. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes.
Survivors include is wife, Betty Hewitt, Gas City; daughter, Connie(David) Viellieux , Marion; grandchildren, Tonya (Chad) Gosnell,Fairmount, Jim Hewitt, Fairmount, Larry (Aabrey) Viellieux, Muncie,John Viellieux, Terre Haute; great grandchildren, Beccy, Krista,Jaden, Wyatt, Laylaa, Connor; sister, Jackie (Marion) Wolf, Jonesboro.
He was preceded in death by son, Jerry L. Hewitt; brothers, Gerald andLawrence Hewitt.
Funeral Service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 2, 2013 inNeedham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St.,Gas City, Indiana with Pastor Mick Simpkins officiating. Burial willbe in Grant Memorial Park, Marion
