He served in World War II in the South Pacific: New Guinea, the Philippines, and many small islands. He was a member of the "Special Services," which carried entertainers to the troops and went on small boats to deliver movies to the large ships. Joseph was not in combat, but was fired upon many times. He contracted malaria, which affected him for 10-15 years.
Joseph was a volunteer who taught and raised money for the Red Cross.
He received a 50-year pin from them.
His first wife, Paula, was cremated and her ashes were scattered at Cannon Beach, Oregon.
After Paula's death, Joseph married Lu, who survived him.
