Notes - GILES, Garland Garland E. Giles, 85, of Moncks Corner, SC died Monday, December 17, 2007 in a Charleston Hospital. Memorial services will be held Thursday afternoon, December 20, 2007 at Parks Funeral Home Chapel at two o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Mr. Giles was born August 4, 1922 in Byromville, Ga, a son of Grover Lewis Giles and Ola McKinley Giles. He was retired from the USAF in 1972 after 30 years of service. He was a WWII veteran serving with the 494 Bomber Group of the 867 Air Squadron in the Pacific, flying the B24. He served in the Berlin Airlift and Korean Conflict. He flew missions in the Vietnam War from CAFB and served in operations Deep freeze re-supplying Antarctica. He was stationed at Charleston Air Force Base from 1961-1972. He was one of the first pilots of the C130, C141 and C5A flying missions out of CAFB. He served as the Base Operations Officer during the last years of his career. Dad loved to hunt and fish in exotic locations bringing home moose, geese or trout from the far reaches the Air Force flew. He enjoyed woodworking, cabinet making, playing with new tools and problems solving with his hands. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Kathleen T. Giles; Children, Gary Giles of Oak Ridge, TN, Steve Giles of Moncks Corner, Lynn Giles Satterfield of Summerville and Donald Giles of Augusta GA; 9 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren.
