John Wesley Britt, a tinsmith came to the Texas Panhandle in 1889 from Austin, by way of Decatur. He took up land about two or three miles southeast of Amarillo where he built a pine shack, fourteen by thirty-two feet. There he and his wife and two children made their home. Immediately south of the Britt home, thousands of cattle were constantly held, some for weeks at a time awaiting shipment. The cowboys used to bring the family large hunks of beef which they had killed for food. Soon after coming to Potter County, John Britt established the Britt Sheet Metal Manufacturing Company, which the business was still maintained at the time of the article by descendants of John Britt.
