Herald-Post reporter Loretta Overton won the top award for best news feature on construction. The awards were made at a luncheon of the West Texas Area Council AGC in the International Club attended by contractors and representatives of the City, Public Service Board, Texas Highway Department, Bureau of Public Roads, and State Sen. Joe Christie. A $250 scholarship was award ed to Daniel Waterhouse, a junior civil engineering major at the University of Texas at El Paso. Mrs. Overton and Trollin ger received framed citations and $100 cash awards. Presentation of the winning awards was made by Tom Han sen, AGC area chairman and Jack Vowell Jr., awards committee chairman. Trollinger's award was for a series of construction photographs published in The El Paso Times. Mrs. Overton's feature was an account of her trip to the top of the recently completed smokestack at the American Smelting & Refining Co., the world's tallest at 828 feet. Trollinger, a journalism grad U.T. El Paso, won the 1966 Fire Fighter's Award for best fire picture and the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Award for the best news photo of the year.
