7 | Matthias Jacobs, the ninth child of WILLIAM JACOBS, SR., andELIZABETH DROLLINGER, was born in East Pennsboro Township of CumberlandCounty, Pennsylvania, on November 7, 1787. Soon after his birth, hisparents moved to virgin land on Dan's Mountain in the George's CreekHundred area of Allegany County, Maryland, near the present-day village ofLonaconing. Little is known of Matthias' early days on the family farm. However, on November 14, 1809, he was married to Margaret Potter by ReverendWilliam Shaw, a Methodist circuit-rider preacher. They were eventuallyblessed by having ten children: Kelite, Elizabeth, William, Catherine,Asenath, Hezekiah, Norman, Martha, Zilpha and Nathan. After her death in 1833, Matthias was appointed executor of theestate of his mother, ELIZABETH DROLLINGER JACOBS. As such, he eventualybought most of the family's 50-acre farm from his brothers and sisters. He eventually sold the farm on Dan's Mountain, described as Lot3795, to William Shaw, the son of Reverend William Shaw, for $252 in1847. Matthias apparently became a rather wealthy land owned in thearea, as deeds show him owning Military Lots No. 3763, 3764, 3765, which comprised the family's "home place," plus Lots No. 3767, 3768 and3769. On January 29, 1814, he bought Lot No. 3764, known locally as the "Addition" from John Dixon. Then on June 1, 1819, he proceededto buy 50-acre Lot No. 3765 from John Spiker. In 1857, he bought "Comeby Chance" from John Muir, to whom it had been patented on May 25,1787. Matthias died on January 22, 1863. He was buried in the HanselCemetery on Laurel Run Road at Moscow Mills in Allegany County, Maryland.Nothing is presently known about the date of death or burial place of hiswife, Margaret. | Jacobs, Matthias (I5331)

8 | Cephas Jacobs, the eleventh child of GABRIEL JACOBS andMARGARET JACKSON, was born on the slopes of Dan's Mountain in AlleganyCounty, Maryland, on January 8, 1826. He grew to manhood on hisparent's farm there, receiving his education in the area's one-roomschool house and his religious instructions in the nearby Methodist Churchunder the guidance of Reverend William Shaw. Little is known of Cephas' activities as a young adult. However, it is known that he met, fell in love with and married Margaret AnneRavenscroft on April 10, 1851, probably in the George's Creek Valley area ofAllegany County. Her parents were Abner Ravenscroft and Nancy Corbus of Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). She was born inGeorge's Creek Valley of Allegany County, Maryland on April 10, 1831. Four children were born to Cephas and Margaret Anne, includingThomas Perry in 1852 who became a lawyer and served as a judge in theU. S. District Court and later served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1884. He also was a regent of theUniversity of West Virginia and a mayor of New Martinsville, West Virginia.William, their second son, was born in 1854 and was a printer by trade.Their son, James G., was born on July 21, 1858 and died that sameyear. A daughter, Margaret Virginia, was born in 1860 and marriedReverend George Kelly. Their last child, Elmer Forrest, was born in 1866 andbecame an architect. Not long after his marriage to Margaret Anne, Cephas moved hisfamily to Preston County, Virginia (now West Virginia), in 1853, wherehe purchased a grist mill, a saw mill and a tannery on Bird'sCreek. In 1869, he moved to Monongalia County, West Virginia, where hepurchased a farm on the west side of the Monongahela River, oppositeMorgantown, and was successfully engaged in agriculture there until 1891. Oneof his reasons for moving to this area was so he could put his threeboys through West Virginia University. Then in Julu,1892, he moved intoMorgantown, West Virginia, where he built a fine home on Foundry Street. A family tragedy occured when their daughter Margaret Virginia (Jennie) died at the age of 35 in about 1895. As a result,Cephas and Margaret took her three children, Lulu, Edna and Chauncey Kelly,to raise. Cephas was a Republican and was elected by his party to twoterms as a justice of the peace in the Grant District of town. He wasalso very active in civic affairs, and became a member of the Morgan LodgeNo. 4 of the Free and Accepted Masons. He was also a member of theBoard of Stewards of the Methodist Episcopal Church, one of theorganizers and the president of the First National Building and Loan Association of Charleston, West Virginia, and a director of the Second NationalBank of Morgantown. Cephas passed away in Morgantown, West Virginia, on February 2,1903. Margaret died there on September 13, 1914. Both were buried inthe Oak Creek Cemetery in Morgantown. REFERENCES: 1. 9 | George lived in the family home until he married in 1871. George andSallie were married by Clinton Rush, Justice of the Peace, at highnoon 1 January 1871 at her father's home in nearby Palestine. Fiftyyears later, some of the same people who attended the marriage helpedthe Noggles celebrate their golden anniversary. The History of Darke County indicated a variety of occupationsfor George: farmer, teacher, and clerk before going into the grocerybusiness in New Madison. The 1870 census says he is "at home," so itwould appear that he was getting a late start on all his occupations. To be sure his father was ill and he may have been at home to helpcare for him. He participated in politics being elected Justice of thePeace in 1876 and popular enough to be re-elected in1879. He wasmayor of New Madison twice-from 1882-1884 and 1887-1900. He followedin the foot steps of his cousin George W. Noggle who was mayor1877-1880. During George's second term, he saw to conclusion theestablishment of the city cemetery Greenmound, something started inhis cousin's term. The cousins were actively involved in decidingcemetery's location, purchasing the property, proposing and voting ona levy to pay for the purchase, and advertising the lots once thecemetery became active. From conception to first burial took onlythree years. The Darke County Directory of 1885 was the first directorypublished for the county and George advertised as an auctioneer whileMrs. Sallie Noggle advertised as a dressmaker. George continued tohopscotch through occupations. In 1900 he was a fire insurance agentliving in a hotel. He had been married 29 years, but Sallie was notenumerated with him and has not been located in this census. PerhapsGeorge and Sallie were preparing to move to Richmond, Indiana, wherethey lived from 1903 until George's death in 1924. George was alaborer in a piano factory 1910 and 1920. Although he changed occupations as quickly as he changed clothes, this seems out of character with all his former means of making aliving. He was not usually a laborer and here he was at 74 stillworking. One wonders if George had severe financial problems, wasincompetent, or was an alcoholic. Nonetheless, Sallie was still by hisside, continuing to work as a dressmaker, one of the few occupationsopen to married women of her era. A thorough onsite search of extantDarke County records, such as tax and court, might reveal someanswers. It is surprising that this couple would leave their lifelong homein Darke County, especially since they had been active in thecommunity. This might further support a theory of deep financialtrouble. However, they were childless and perhaps moved to be closerto younger relatives. Nieces and nephews often step up to elder carewhen no other family members are available. George died in the home ofa neighbor, Harry Hazeltine, and was buried in the Spring Lawncemetery at New Paris, Indiana. It would seem that George and Salliebecame well-established in the Richmond area, otherwise, surely Georgewould have been buried with many of his relatives in one of thecemeteries in Darke County, such as Greenmound, which he helped createor Universalist Church where his parents were buried. Yet thecelebration of George and Sallie's 50th wedding anniversary took placein New Madison. It was a gala occasion with dinner and movies shown inthe Community Building. Among the attendees were several Haseltinesand Rev. Isley who officiated at George's funeral. The Isley surnameis associated with the Drollingers as far back as the late 1700's inNorth Carolina. 39 | Dear Brother 5 Aug 1870 It has been a long time since I have ritten to you and I suppose you think I have forgotten you. But I have not. But I have been very neglectfull and might have ritten many times yet yet I often think of you and wish you was hear. Some times when I would have ritten I know not your office address. I lerned often times from Jane since then would neglect it until a few days ago. I received a letter from you with much satisfaction and now set down to answer same, hoping you will excuse the past neglect and right often as you can. As you got my office address correct, I will give it to you again, Sechlarville, Jackson county, Wisconsin. Joseph lives near Tomah, Monroe county. Jane is married and lives in Colorado Territory. This is her office address: Jane Brown, Golden City, Colorado. William lives there too with Jane. John W. Brown is her husband's name. The rest is all here with me and all well now. Harriot is married and has got three children, her husband's name is Martin Brown. My crops is quite light this year on account of the dry season. Give my respects and family to all. The friends right soon as you get this letter as I am about to close having nothing more to right at present, so I will close by asking sister Rebecca's office address. Yours most respectfully E. A. McGinnis Sechlarville, 6 March 1870 Dear Nephew I received your letter of Feb 19 happy to hear from you. Of course you know as you will see from this note I am always happy to hear from my friends. You are teaching school as I have seen from your letter. What is Rebecca's address, post office I mean. The accident I spoke about was when Susan Archer was killed and William Wilson's girl, and Shuble Luce son Buisnyo is not very good hear. But you better come this way and see how you like the country hear. Maybe you will like it hear and if you do not like it here I will go with you to Massina land is high here. 43 | https://www.slu.edu/arts-and-sciences/languages-literatures-cultures/academics/german-profiles/tristan-druelinger.php Saint Louis University Tristan Druelinger says that his experiences in the German studies program at SLU and studying abroad in Heidelberg have contributed to his personal and professional growth. When did you graduate from SLU and with what degree? I graduated from SLU in May of 2020 with my bachelor's degree. I studied education studies and German (double major). What was the best part of being a part of the German program at SLU ? or a favorite memory? There are so many good things about the German program at SLU that it's hard to pick just one, but I've narrowed it down to a couple. First, the professors are really great. Not only are they incredibly knowledgeable about their field but they also go above and beyond to help students succeed and understand the material. Another really great thing is the sense of community in the German community. There is the Sprachwochenende retreat which, although I was only able to attend once, was a really great way to get to know everyone in the program. There are many various events offered by the professors throughout the semester, and now there is also the German club which, while separate from the German division, often works closely with the German faculty to create wonderful, enriching opportunities for those interested in the German language and culture to come together. The final point I want to bring up is the study abroad program. The German program at SLU is partnered with the American Junior Year at Heidelberg. Study abroad is an absolutely life changing experience anyway, but the program at SLU is especially good. They really strive to work with you to make sure that you achieve everything you want to during your time in Germany and they do so much with you to help you understand the region, its history, and they help you navigate the advanced bureaucracy at German universities, which can be daunting as an American exchange student. Why would you recommend taking German at SLU to other Billikens? I think learning languages is very important, especially in our increasingly connected world. Speaking another language opens you up to so many opportunities professionally and personally. Many of my closest relationships have come about as a result of my study of the German language. These are people I likely would never have met or even been able to interact with if I had not learned German. What are you doing now? I am currently teaching online German classes at a couple of German language schools in the Midwest. I have plans to pursue a master's degree in German at Middlebury Language Schools, though I have decided to wait to start until that can be done in person (hopefully the academic year 2021-2022). In what way did your German major prepare you for what you do now? There are many ways in which my time in the German program at SLU prepared me for this. The classes I took at SLU allowed me to develop a great knowledge of the German language, culture, history, and literature. The internship opportunities I was afforded during my time there were also formative and allowed me to develop skills and experience in the various areas I might work in with a German degree (for example teaching or translation). They also allowed me to build up professional connections. And lastly the study abroad opportunity at SLU was instrumental to my ability to speak German. Language classes are great, especially at SLU, but being able to live in Germany surrounded by the language and culture I was studying, and to experience life in a country to which I was and am planning to move, is irreplaceable. And the study abroad program at SLU is first rate, in its execution as well as in the way that they work with you and your professors back at SLU. | Druelinger, Tristan (I26596)
