9072 | Shopping for a cause: Annual Yard Sale Returns Friday to Raise Money For Grants Supporting Others in Need Text and photos by ROBIN HART robin.hart@amnews.com Centre College’s 15th annual Hope Springs yard sale happens Friday at Chowan Hall on the college’s campus. Patsi Trollinger, who has helped organize the sale for several years, said the fundraiser began when a friend with multiple sclerosis needed a little extra assistance in paying for things she needed that her insurance wouldn’t cover. Trollinger said the Hope Springs organization offered to help, but her friend also wanted the proceeds to help others with the same incurable disease. So now profits from the annual sale goes to those who have MS and have applied for a grant to assist with paying for things like building a ramp and wheelchair repairs. Last year, however, the organization paid for repairs to the special device at the McDowell Wellness Center’s pool that gently lifts patients in and out of the pool for physical therapy. This chair didn’t only help Trollinger’s friend, but it also helped lots of people who use the machine, she said. After grants are awarded from what’s brought in, all money leftover is spent on local issues such as hunger, child services and animal welfare, Trollinger said. She said last year’s sale brought in well over $8,000. Shoppers will find a little bit of everything: items for dorm rooms; vacuums; clothes; dishes; adult costumes; and artificial trees, just to name a few. So, if you’re looking to decorate a dorm room, need more dishes, or even want a few adult-sized costumes or a couple of artificial trees, the Hope Springs sale is the place to shop, and it’s for a good cause. Shopping for a cause: Annual yard sale returns Friday to raise money for grants supporting others in need Patsi Trollinger, left, and Teresa Goggin work together in arranging a table full of drink ware. They are setting up items for Friday’s Hope Springs yard sale, happening at Chowan Hall on Centre College’s campus. The money goes to benefit others in need in the area. IF YOU GO The Hope Springs yard sale will be 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday at Chowan Hall, located at Harding Street and Perryville Road, on Centre College’s campus. All proceeds from the sale will be used to help Boyle County and the surrounding counties in several ways. (At least one living or private individual is linked to this item - Details withheld.) |

9077 | Snakes Snakes. Mr. Arch. Jeffreys, of this county, informs us that week before last while engaged in his field, a negro man got after a moccasin snake, which took refuge in an old hollow log, and as this was not the first time a snake had been seen hiding itself in this log, the negro split it open, when a bed of thirty-five moccasins was revealed to the eye of the astonished negro who, terror-struck, fled. Mr. Jeffreys, however, renewed the war and exterminated them. They were of various sizes. Milton Chronicle. |

9099 | Sudden Death Sudden Death. To the Editor of the Enterprise. Our community was shocked last Saturday morning with the sad news that Mr. W J. Trollinger, a merchant at Setzer's, was dead. He had attended to business as usual on Friday.- but soon after eating his supper was stricken with paralysis, and died about four o'clock Saturday morning. He was in his 38th year, was a strong, robust man, and twelve hours before his death bade fair for a long and prosperous life. Such deaths, and the records cf them are of late so numerous, save to the living, though strong and robust, "Set thine house in order for thou shalt die and not live." He had been married only three months, and the stroke falling so suddenly, with only a few hours warning on the heart of the young and widowed one has almost crushed it. He was buried at Catawba on Sunday. The funeral services were conducted by Bey. J. B. Marsh in the presence of a crowded house, where sad faces, and flowing tears bespoke their sympathy for the bereaved and their respect for the dead. |
