Focus on Children, is the name of the game, and for the fifth summer in a row the children are getting the opportunity to focus on special activities available to them m he Eastbay. ) The inter-racial, multi-cultural program was begun in 1968 by a group of East, Oakland churches. The only cost to the more than 200 children participating this month is a $2 insurance fee and a bag lunch from home. t Provided are free milk and cookies and an introduction to irts, crafts, swimming, field Jrips, puppet shows, playgrounds and a variety of musical and cultural programs. The ratio of staff members to children is about one to-five, with those in staff roles including Laney College stu-dents, Neighborhood Youth Corps workers and volunteers. (In the latter category, Douglas says there is still a need for specialists in language arts, drama and music ). Focus runs on a summer budget of around $',000, all donated by churches, civic-minded oigamzations and businesses, and only one-third of the sum carmaiked for staff salaries. Everyone keeps saying, Lets get things together, says Douglas, but very few action programs do this. Thats why Focus is different, youngsters enjoy a happy summertime in Focus program Three-quarters of the children enrolled are Mexican-American. The rest are members of various laces from East Oakland, North Oakland, -the Lake Merritt area and the Oakland hills. They meet from 10 a m. to 2 p m. each Monday through Friday at Lazear Elemental y School, 824 29th Ave. The program is divided into four groups. A pre-school program is directed by Mrs. Ka-thie Gordon; a grade one through three program is' headed by Miss Annette Marks; a grade four through six program is led by Manuel .Jimenez and a Wagner Ranch bummer School is directed by Warren Arnold. She attended high school at Kennett and went to Ark. State Teachers College, where she majored in English and minored in Library School. Before coming to Central Mrs. Trollinger taught English, Spanish and was librarian at Shawnee High School in Joiner, Ark. She also taught English at Cooter High School in Cooter, Missouri. | 9133 |  | The John Trolingers' 50th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. John Trolinger, three miles southwest of Calhoun, celebrated their Golden Wedding Sunday, Oct. 6, with an open house from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. About 150 were in attendance to extend sincere congratulations and good wishes to the honorees. The Trolingers were especially pleased to have their two children, Mrs. Charles (Alene) Croley, Kansas City, and Carl Trolinger, Calhoun, and all their grandchildren present. The reception table, with white cloth and a hand crocheted centerpiece, featured a beautiful three-tier wedding cake iced white, decorated with yellow roses and topped with a gold numeral "50". On each side were two graduated candles in crystal holders. Added sparkle on the table was the crystal crystal punch service. Presiding at the refreshment table were the daughter, Mrs. Croley, and daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Trolinger, assisted by three granddaughters, Mrs. Roy Baskins, Windsor, Mrs. Bob Trolinger, Lee's Summit, and Mrs. Mack Croley. Kansas City. A ten - year - old granddaughter, Miss Barbara Trolinger, was in charge of the guest book and Miss Kathy, eight-year old granddaughter, took care of the gifts. Also among the many present were Mr. Trolinger's sister, Mrs. Edna Newman, Lincoln, and Mrs. Trolinger's sisters. Mrs. Link Evertt, Branson, Mrs. Fred Barr, Mrs. Curtis Earnest, Springfield, Mo., and her brother, Ben Starks, Clinton. John Trolinger and his sweetheart. Grace Starks, both then of Creighton. took the train on Oct. 1, 1913, for Harrisonville where they were married. After a few vears residence at Creighton they lived for several years south of Calhoun then returned to the Creighton community for a number number of years more. However, about 30 years ago they returned to the Calhoun vicinity which since has been their home. The Trolingers were blessed with three children but lost their son, Johnnie, on July 14. 1943 when he was killed in action with the US Army overseas, the first Henry Countian to be recorded thus. The Trolingers were especially proud of their seven grandchildren and their three great-grandchildren. On their wedding day 50 years ago the Trolingers were attended by Mrs. Trolinger's sister, Miss Ruby Starks, and Mr. Trolinger's brother, Will Trolinger. Five days afterward the two became man and wife, consequently Sunday was their Golden Wedding anniversary. The Will Trolingers now live in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. In view of the happy occasion a long distance call was made to California and the entire family group had a joyous visit by phone. Numerous good wishes for many more happy, healthful years to come were extended the John Trolingers who were deeply appreciative of the many visits, cards and lovely gifts on their momentous milestone in life. |

The picture was taken July 7 when a tank car of molasses blew its top at, the National Molasses Co., 1301 S. Kansas St. Times Photographer Wins First Place Photo Award John Trollinger, photographer for The El Paso Times, Saturday received the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Association first place award for spot news pictures of 1965. Trollinger won the award for his picture taken last July of a man covered with molasses who was standing atop a railroad tank car which had just exploded. Trollinger won the highest award in competition with photographs for newspapers in Texas cities of more than 75,000 population. The picture, which was transmitted on Associated Press photofax, earlier was praised by the AP, which noted it was used very prominently on front pages in papers throughout the nation. Trollinger started out his newspaper career as a copy boy for Stars and Stripes in Darmstadt, West Germany, where his father was stationed. He joined The El Paso Times in August, 1963, as a sports writer and part-time photographer. He soon, however, became a full-time photographer. He has continued to carry a full load of courses at Texas Western College where he is a senior majoring in journalism. He is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity, and a member of the Prospector and Flow Sheet staffs. Trollinger was in the office when he first heard the report on the police radio of an explosion last July 7 at the railroad tracks at National Molasses Co., 1301 S. Kansas St. A tanker car full of molasses had expanded because of the heat and exploded. Trollinger took a number of pictures and then waited to watch while persons began cleaning up the molasses. Many of the other photographers had taken pictures and left. Suddenly, there was another explosion. "A man who had been cleaning up was dripping molasses," said Trollinger who was 100 yards from the tanker. He moved in and took the prize winning picture. "After I found out that the man was not injured seriously, I thought it was funny," Trollinger said. He is the son of 1st Sgt. and Mrs. John B. Trollinger of Ft. Bliss. | 9147 | | Trolinger's Attorney Relates Details of George Shooting By WAYNE PERRY Tribune Staff Writer Guy M. Trolinger, who had been held in connection with the shooting death of Indianapolis Motor Speedway vice president president Elmer George, was “just a man protecting himself and his family," according to Public Defender William Smock. Smock made that statement shortly after a Vigo County grand jury investigating George’s death returned a "no bill" decision for Trolinger on Friday shortly after noon. Vigo County Prosecutor Michael H. Kearns said that the no bill “amounts to a finding of justifiable homicide." Within 10 minutes after the grand jury had notified Kearns and Vigo Circuit Court Judge C. Joseph Anderson of its decision, Anderson heard a request by Kearns that the preliminary charges facing Trolinger be dropped. Trolinger had been held on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill, pending the grand jury decision. Anderson granted the dismissal request and also agreed with a request by Smock that Trolinger’s bond (which had been reduced from $100,000 to $10,000) be canceled and his arrest record expunged. Trolinger, who was released from jail Thursday, attended the brief court session and was greeted with kisses and hugs from his family after the dismissal was granted. Following the no bill decision by the jury Smock outlined some information concerning the George shooting that had not been previously released. Smock said that Trolinger, a horse trainer at the Terre Haute farm owned by Tony Hulman, president of the Speedway and George’s father-in-law, had been called by George on Sunday afternoon, May 30. Smock said that Trolinger had commented that George was “very upset" and asked that Trolinger be out of the house in which he was staying that day. Trolinger had reportedly quit his job at the Hulman farm and had agreed earlier to move out of the residence by Wednesday, June 2. George's telephone call to Trolinger had been reported by several sources earlier this week. Reports were that George had an argument with his wife, the former Mari Hulman, a few hours after the conclusion of the Indianapolis 500 race on Sunday. Following that argument George had reportedly called Trolinger and ordered him to leave the Hulman farm. Then, George reportedly drove to Terre Haute in an Indianapolis 500 pace car. Smock said that a few hours after Trolinger had received the Sunday telephone call he heard a dog barking at the rear of his house. Trolinger had been lying on the couch and went to the back door of the two- story frame house to investigate. Trolinger said that George broke the glass to the door and came into the home firing a gun, which was later identified as a 22 caliber weapon. According to Smock, Trolinger grabbed a rifle that was in the house and tried to protect himself. Trolinger reportedly ran up the stairs in an effort to get away from George but the latter apparently “kept coming, firing his gun.” Trolinger then started shooting down the stairs and, according to Smock, George fell dead on the top step of the stairway. Apparently as many as 17 shots were fired by the two men. These incidents occurred at approximately approximately 1 a.m. on Monday. After the shooting Trolinger apparently called the police and when a car came to investigate and missed the drive, Trolinger reportedly went out to the highway and flagged the car down. Smock said that trying to determine George’s motive for the apparent attack on Trolinger would be “only supposition.” “My client was willing to go before the grand jury and testify at any time to these events," Smock said. The public defender added that Trolinger’s aunt and uncle were in an. upstairs bedroom at the house and were asleep when the shooting began. “He was just a man protecting himself and his family,” Smock summarized. "It is obvious to both my client and myself that justice was reached when the grand jury returned a no bill,” Smock said. “My client had no other course but to shoot this man when he busted into his house,” the attorney concluded. Kearns said after the jury returned the no bill that the six-member panel had apparently apparently "found no evidence for an indictment” and that the case was concluded concluded as far as he was concerned. Trolinger, 34, was given permission to continue the removal of his belongings from the home that he had occupied. During the grand jury investigation several persons were called to give testimony, including Hulman, Mrs. George, and race driver A.J. Foyt.
