9354 | Snakes Snakes. Mr. Arch. Jeffreys, of this county, informs us that week before last while engaged in his field, a negro man got after a moccasin snake, which took refuge in an old hollow log, and as this was not the first time a snake had been seen hiding itself in this log, the negro split it open, when a bed of thirty-five moccasins was revealed to the eye of the astonished negro who, terror-struck, fled. Mr. Jeffreys, however, renewed the war and exterminated them. They were of various sizes. Milton Chronicle. |

9377 | Sudden Death Sudden Death. To the Editor of the Enterprise. Our community was shocked last Saturday morning with the sad news that Mr. W J. Trollinger, a merchant at Setzer's, was dead. He had attended to business as usual on Friday.- but soon after eating his supper was stricken with paralysis, and died about four o'clock Saturday morning. He was in his 38th year, was a strong, robust man, and twelve hours before his death bade fair for a long and prosperous life. Such deaths, and the records cf them are of late so numerous, save to the living, though strong and robust, "Set thine house in order for thou shalt die and not live." He had been married only three months, and the stroke falling so suddenly, with only a few hours warning on the heart of the young and widowed one has almost crushed it. He was buried at Catawba on Sunday. The funeral services were conducted by Bey. J. B. Marsh in the presence of a crowded house, where sad faces, and flowing tears bespoke their sympathy for the bereaved and their respect for the dead. |

9379 | ![]() | Summer Focus on Children Summer Focus on Children . Focus on Children, is the name of the game, and for the fifth summer in a row the children are getting the opportunity to focus on special activities available to them m he Eastbay. ) The inter-racial, multi-cultural program was begun in 1968 by a group of East, Oakland churches. The only cost to the more than 200 children participating this month is a $2 insurance fee and a bag lunch from home. t Provided are free milk and cookies and an introduction to irts, crafts, swimming, field Jrips, puppet shows, playgrounds and a variety of musical and cultural programs. I Thornhill Elementary .School Principal Norman 0. JDouglas and community worker Mane Cobbs are leaders or the program. The ratio of staff members to children is about one to-five, with those in staff roles including Laney College stu-dents, Neighborhood Youth Corps workers and volunteers. (In the latter category, Douglas says there is still a need for specialists in language arts, drama and music ). Focus runs on a summer budget of around $',000, all donated by churches, civic-minded oigamzations and businesses, and only one-third of the sum carmaiked for staff salaries. Everyone keeps saying, Lets get things together, says Douglas, but very few action programs do this. Thats why Focus is different, youngsters enjoy a happy summertime in Focus program Three-quarters of the children enrolled are Mexican-American. The rest are members of various laces from East Oakland, North Oakland, -the Lake Merritt area and the Oakland hills. They meet from 10 a m. to 2 p m. each Monday through Friday at Lazear Elemental y School, 824 29th Ave. The program is divided into four groups. A pre-school program is directed by Mrs. Ka-thie Gordon; a grade one through three program is' headed by Miss Annette Marks; a grade four through six program is led by Manuel .Jimenez and a Wagner Ranch bummer School is directed by Warren Arnold.
