James married Mary Trullinger on 12 June 1840 in Fountain Co, IN. Theywere parents of 6 children, Caroline F. Hanshew[married Aaron Ogden],Margaret Ellen Hanshew[married George L. Pottorff], William TrullingerHanshew[married Charlotte Edwinnie "Edwene" Stella Bates], SarahHanshew[no other info], Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Hanshew[married GeorgeEugene Rama and James Brogan Miller] and Marietta Hanshew[marriedMarion Merritt]. James and Mary later separated. He had a son Edward Hanshew but I donot know who the mother was or if they were married. Our familyhistory is that son William Trullinger Hanshew did not like having towatch this baby brother. William left for Civil War before age 16 in1863 so Edward would have been born prior to that date. In 1860 census James and Mary are living in Davis Co, IA. He is afarmer and carpenter. I have not been able to locate him on latercensus but family record has him dying in 1892. And Mary died 1895. In1870 she was living with her daughter Marietta. 429 | The Third Georgia Regiment served stateside during the Spanish American War, but following the war, the unit served in Cuba as part of the occupation force. Unit History: The 3rd Georgia Volunteer Infantry was organized after President William McKinley's second call for troops. On June 17, 1898, Colonel John S. Chandler was appointed as the unit's commander, however the unit was not mustered into service until August 24, 1898 at Griffin, Georgia. The war's fighting had ended on August 12, 1898 by armistice, though the war would officially continue until the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10. The Third Georgia's career as a military unit started too late for it to be actively involved in the conflict. Colonel Chandler's experience was that of commander of the Fifth Regiment of Georgia Infantry since 1893, and also as state judge advocate. The second in command was Lt. Col. R. L. Berner of Forsyth, Georgia. Forsyth had been a state senator, a member of the state House of Representatives and a candidate for governor. Berner's military experience was limited to his servce as a 2nd lieutenant in the Quitman Guards of the Second Regiment of Georgia Volunteers. The companies were raised from the following locations: Company A - Atlanta and Elberton (Capt. W. W. Davies) Company B - Griffin, Spalding, Butts, and Upson Counties (Capt Aaron Burr) Company C - Newnan, Coweta, Meriwether, Carroll, Ferrell and Paulding Counties (Capt. J. E. Powell). Company D - Rome, Floyd, Polk, Walker Irwin and Dade Counties (Capt. Henry J. Stewart) Company E - Atlanta, Fulton and DeKalb Counties (Capt. Amos Baker) Company F - Marietta, Atlanta and Cobb, Pualding, Bartow, Pickens, Milton and Cherokee Counties (Capt. S. V. Sanford) Company G - Albany, Brunswick, and Dougherty, Lee, Glynn, McIntosh and Wayne Counties (Capt. J. I. Gilbert) Company H - Americus, Columbus and Sumter, Muscogee, Troup and Harris Counties (Capt. Charles E. Van Riper) Company I - Augusta, Milledgeville, and Richmond, Baldwin, Wilkinson, Hancock and Warren Counties (Capt. J. H. Stevens) Company K - Savannah and Chatham, Newton, Habersham, and Rabun Counties (Capt. Henry Kolshorm) Company L - Forsyth and Monroe, Upson, Dooly, Pulaski, Thomas and Brooks Counties (Capt. W. E. Sanders) Company M - Macon, and Murray, Bibb, Whitfield, Gilmor, Houston and Crawford Counties (Capt. Robert Hodges) The unit was presented with a regimental flag by the state legislature and a stand of colors by the ladies of Atlanta. At the time of its mustering in, the unit consisted of firty-three officers and 1,243 enlisted men. With the end of the war on December 10, 1898, the need arose for occupation troops in the areas captured during the war. The 3rd Georgia was sent to Cuba, leaving the U.S. on January 14, 1899, arriving in Cuba four days later. The unit would remain in Cuba just over two months, leaving the island on March 25, 1899, and arriving back in the United States on March 29. The 3rd Georgia was mustered out on April 22, 1899 at Augusta, Georgia. At the time of its mustering out, the unit consisted of forty-six officers and 945 enlisted men. During its term of service, the unit lost one officer and twenty-four enlisted men to disease, and one enlisted man died as the result of an accident. In addition, two enlisted men were court-martialed, fifty enlisted men deserted, and twenty-two enlisted men were discharged on disability. | Perkerson, Carl Bingley (I43009)

430 | The Third Marine Division officially activated 16 September 1942 at Camp Elliott, San Diego, California. It was built around the 9th Marines, commanded by Colonel Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. who later became the 20th Commandant of the Marine Corps. Major General Charles D. Barrett was the first Commanding General of the Division. As 1942 drew to a close the Division was still located at Camp Elliott. It busied itself organizing and training for action in the South Pacific. In January and February 1943 divisional elements moved to Auckland, New Zealand. By August 1943 the Division was stationed on Guadalcanal where special training and rehearsals for the Bougainville operation were intensified. On 1 November 1943 the Division landed at Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville. For approximately two months the Division took part in the fight against stiff and heavy enemy resistance. On 16 January 1944, with the transfer of command in the area to the Army's XIV Corps, the last elements of the Division returned to Guadalcanal. Following the Bougainville operation the Division began training for the next campaign. Verbal instructions received in February 1944 led to planning for an operation against the Japanese on Emirau Island. The projected Emirau operation was subsequently cancelled and instructions were received to initiate planning for an operation against enemy forces at Kavieng, New Ireland. This operation was also called off. A few days later the Division received word to start training for the amphibious assault against the Japanese on Guam, Marianas. Divisional elements embarked at Guadalcanal on 2 and 3 June 1944 and sailed for Kwajalein, Marshall Islands enroute to the Marianas. It remained afloat off Saipan from 15 to 28 June 1944 as part of the reserve force for the Saipan operation, then being carried out by the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions in conjunction with the 27th Infantry Division. With the situation on Saipan well controlled the Division returned to its restaging area awaiting the target date for the Guam operation. On 21 July 1944, as a part of the Southern Troops and Landing Force, the Division landed on western beaches of Guam in the vicinity of Asan Point. After twenty days of savage fighting the divisional units reached the northern coast of the island. On 10 August 1944 Guam was declared secure. Until its departure for the Iwo Jima campaign, the Division remained on Guam taking part in the mopping up operations. By the middle of February 1945 the Division completed embarkation at Guam for participation in the Iwo Jima operation. Initially, the Division remained afloat off Iwo Jima as Expeditionary Troops Reserve. Elements began landing on 21 February. On 25 February, the 3d Marine Division launched an attack in its zone between the 4th and 5th Marine Divisions. The Third Marine Division faced well-organized and determined enemy resistance. The terrain, ideal for defense, was heavily fortified by pillboxes, caves, and covered artillery emplacements. Progress was slow and casualties heavy during the first few days of fighting. The Division slowly pushed the enemy back and by 3 March had severed the last enemy east-west artery of communication by occupying positions overlooking the sea. The Division secured its zone of action on 11 March and then initiated intensive patrolling and mopping-up operations. On 16 March, units of the 3d Marine Division relieved elements of the 5th Division and delivered the final attack of the Iwo Jima operation - a drive to Kitano Point. Iwo Jima was declared secure on the same day. On 4 April the 3d Marine Division was relieved by Army units. By mid-April 1945 the Division was back on Guam preparing for the next operation. On 3 August 1945 the Battalion received initial plans for the "Olympic" operation which called for an amphibious landing of Kyushu about 1 November 1945. The 3d Marine Division, along with the 2nd and 5th Marine Divisions, was assigned to the V Amphibious Corps for the projected operation. Japan's agreement to cease hostilities and subsequent surrender cancelled "Olympic", and the Division remained on Guam until its deactivation on 28 December 1945. | Trolinder, PFC Wilburn Lige (I26860)

435 | TROLINGER, WILLIAM HENRY (1827-1895). William Henry Trolinger (also spelled Trollinger), physician, developer, state representative, and state senator, was born in Dublin, Pulaski County, Virginia, on August 11, 1827. He was the son of Henry and Allelia (Cecil) Trolinger. In 1832 the family relocated to Springfield, Henry County, Missouri, where Trolinger was raised. As a young man he undertook the study of medicine. On January 22, 1850, Trolinger married the widowed Mary Jane (Thompson) Montgomery in St. Clair County, Missouri. They had several children. Trolinger won election as representative of St. Clair County to the Twenty-First Missouri General Assembly in 1860. In May 1861 he participated in a special legislative session called by pro-slavery governor Claiborne Fox Jackson to create the Missouri State Guard, a state militia organized by Confederate sympathizers in reaction to the Camp Jackson Affair. Trolinger volunteered the following month and served as a lieutenant and quartermaster in the state guard until October 1861. Shortly afterward, Trolinger immigrated with his family to Texas and settled in the vicinity of Whitesboro in Grayson County. In addition to practicing medicine, he assumed a leading role in the public affairs of the community. In 1869 he assisted Ambrose B. White with the survey of the modern township of Whitesboro and donated land for the creation of a public park. Throughout the 1870s and 1880s, Trolinger aggressively promoted the development of area schools, businesses, and infrastructure. In 1872 he won election, on the Democratic ticket, as representative for District 22?comprised of Cooke, Denton, Grayson, Jack, Montague, Wise, Clay, Young, Wichita, Knox, Throckmorton, Baylor, Wilbarger, Haskell, and Hardeman counties?to the Thirteenth Texas Legislature. He chaired the Counties and County Boundaries Committee. The following year Trolinger won election as senator for District 22?now comprised of Grayson, Cooke, Montague, Clay, Wichita, Wilbarger, Hardeman, Archer, Baylor, and Knox counties?to the Fourteenth Texas Legislature. He resigned from office in July 1874 but remained active in the state Democratic executive committee. Trolinger was also a leading member and officer in the Baptist General Convention of Texas. In 1873 he was appointed to the board of trustees of Waco University (now Baylor University), and in 1875 he was elected president of Shiloh Baptist Institute in Whitesboro. He also served on the board of deacons at First Baptist Church in Whitesboro. He was a Mason and Odd Fellow and a charter member of the Odd Fellows B.F. Christian Lodge, No. 102. In 1886 he was elected first president of the County Line Medical Association in Whitesboro. Trolinger died in Grayson County on October 28, 1895, and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery.
