4164 | According to my father she was a strange old lady who didn't believe in paying taxes. Among the papers my dad hung on to was an 1854 Deed for a house bought by William McGinnis for $2000 at Sheriff's sale. He turned around and sold it back to her. She owned the houses at 504 506 North Ave where my great grandfather Adolph W. Drollinger lived. Among the papers was a note to my grandmother Carrie Drollinger for the rent due by her father in law. My grandmother later purchased these houses at Sheriff's sale. Gordon L. 4165 | According to my father, Louis P. Drollinger, she was a gentle tiny blue eyed woman. Widow's pension file certificate number 612 504 gives date of her death 25 Sep 1920, her 1906 application lists her son, Adolph W., under 16, her address as 504 North Ave Allegheny City which was rented and her marriage to A.W. Drollinger on 2 July 1872. How she met A. W. Drollinger is a question perhaps never to be answered. One of those events we can only speculate on. Her husband to be was off in the regular Army until Feb 1870. Statement of Pastor Alonzo J. Turkle in pension claim of Frances. F.J. McGinnis was married to A.W. Drollinger on the 2nd day of July 1872 by the Rev John G. 4166 | According to my mother, her mother hated her name and from an early age chose to go by 'Bernice' including the simplified spelling of it (Bernice vs Berniece). David H. Drollinger 29 Nov 2019 Ref the record of Miriam, her daughter-in-law, for more information. The following information is per the DELAYED OR SPECIAL CERTIFICATE OF BIRTH No. 444205 of THE DIVISION OF HEALTH OF MISSOURI, Bureau of Vital Statistics, FILED in the Division of Health, Jefferson City, Missouri, on "Sep 24 1956" (certified) "Sept. 25, 1956": Full Name at Birth: "Nelia Ivory Berniece Slate" Date of Birth: "2-19-1907" (19 Feb 2017) Color or Race: "White" Sex: "F" Birthplace: (City or Town) "Ava" (County) "Douglas" (State) "Missouri" Father: Full Name: "John William Slate" (Father's) Birthplace: "Douglas County, Mo." Mother: Full Name: "Callia Cornelia Tefteller" (Mother's) Birthplace: Louden County, Tenn." Affidavit: I hereby declare upon oath that the above statements are true. Registrant's own signature: "Bernice Henley" (Note: her signature is somewhat obscure, but appears to be close to Bernice Henley, which was her married surname at the time. She also went by "Bernice" vs "Berniece" which she did not like. She also did not like Nelia or Ivory and never went by those names probably from the time she was a little girl.) Formerly Nelia Ivory Berniece Slate Address: "1405 Jackson Street, Sunnyside, Washington" Subscribed and sworn to me on "August 17th 1956" Notory Public: (illegible signature) ABSTRACT OF SUPPORTING EVIDENCE NAME AND KIND OF DOCUMENT (INCLUDING BY WHOM ISSUED AND SIGNED, AND DATE OF ISSUE) 1) "Family Bible Record" (Date Original Document Was Made) "Years Ago" 2) "Douglas Co. Slate, Mother" (Date Original Document Was Made) "8-26-56" (26 Aug 1956) (Note: The above information represents a partial excerpt. However, it is representative of the majority of information and the important and relevant aspects. It is in the form a photocopy that I believe my mother gave to me some time ago. In a space above the document printed from a typewriter are the following words: "Note: LaVerne here is some additional information mom had given me: Her mother's family, the Teftellers were originally from England. Her mother Cornellia Teftteller, went by the nickname of "Nelia". Her father's parents were Henry (?) Slate who married Sarah Roads. She believed them to be from Kentucky originally but they were married in Mansfield, Missouri. They had five children, Albert, Molly, Jim, Tom and John W. (your grandfather)". I believe these words were typed by LaVerne's sister-in-law, Sue Henley who was married to LaVerne's brother, Paul Henley. (The above document is in my possession and currently filed in a manila file folder titled, "Mom" (my mother, Reta LaVerne Henley). David H. Drollinger 27 Sep 2011 After moving from their home in Eva, Missouri, Grandpa and Grandma and Paul and LaVerne all moved to Washington. I believe they first moved to Bremerton where Grandpa worked as a ship builder in some capacity. From there I believe they all moved to Selah, WA finally settling in Sunnyside, WA not far away. As of this date (27 Mar 2023) I am not yet certain of the addresses they lived at and exactly what time frames for each. Grandma lived in her house at 1405 Jackson Street, Sunnyside, WA for many years in the 1950s and 1960s. Grandma eventually sold her little home on Jackson Street in Sunnyside and moved to a home in Gresham, OR to live near her daughter, LaVerne (my mother). I have been trying to find out what her address was there and exactly the dates she lived there. She left this home to move to her new home at East 11 40th, Spokane, WA due to LaVerne getting married to Rope Nelson who lived in Kona, Hawaii and where she moved to in 1974. Grandma moved to Spokane to live near her son, Paul. Grandma lived in her house at East 11 40th, Spokane, WA for a few years in the 1970s. She lived there before moving to her apartment at E. 1204 30th a short distance away when she was no longer able to care for her house and to live even nearer to her son, Paul, who lived nearby on Manito Blvd. where he could keep an even closer eye on her. It was about this time that she lost her lower leg - just below her knee - to the ravages of diabetes that she fought for many years. Grandma was living at E. 1204 30th Apt 38, Spokane, WA 99203 in 1981. When Grandma was no longer able to care for herself at her 30th Ave apartment she moved into an assisted living/nursing home (Southcrest Nursing Care at 110 W. Cliff Drive, Spokane, WA) not far away where she later passed away. The information regarding Grandma's various residences was provided by me, her grandson, David Drollinger on 27 Mar 2023. 1910 United States Federal Census Name: Ivory V Slate [Nelia Ivory Berniece "Bernice" Slate] Age in 1910: 3 Birth Date: 1907 [1907] Birthplace: Missouri Home in 1910: Mcmurtrey, Douglas, Missouri, USA Race: White Gender: Female Relation to Head of House: Daughter Marital Status: Single Father's Name: John W Slate Father's Birthplace: Missouri Mother's Name: Cornelia C Slate Mother's Birthplace: Tennessee Neighbors: View others on page Household Members (Name) Age Relationship John W Slate 41 Head Cornelia C Slate 35 Wife Ova J Slate 16 Son Earl Slate 14 Son Noble V Slate 13 Son Clifford Slate 11 Son Mable N Slate 8 Daughter William C Slate 5 Son Ivory V Slate 3 Daughter Golda A Slate 1 Daughter 1920 United States Federal Census Name: Bernice I Slate [Nelia Ivory Berniece "Bernice" Slate] Age: 13 Birth Year: abt 1907 Birthplace: Missouri Home in 1920: McMurtrey, Douglas, Missouri Residence Date: 1920 Race: White Gender: Female Relation to Head of House: Daughter Marital Status: Single Father's Name: John W Slate Father's Birthplace: Missouri Mother's Name: Cornelia Slate Mother's Birthplace: Tennessee Able to Speak English: Yes Attended School: yes Able to read: Yes Able to Write: Yes Neighbors: View others on page Household Members (Name) Age Relationship John W Slate 52 Head Cornelia Slate 46 Wife Clifford Slate 20 Son Netus W Morris 18 Daughter Claude W Slate 15 Son Bernice I Slate 13 Daughter Goldie A Slate 11 Daughter Ruby M Slate 8 Daughter Chester M Slate 6 Son Lelsie H Slate 3 Son Russel P Morris 0 Grandson 1940 United States Federal Census Name: Bernice Henley [Nelia Ivory Berniece "Bernice" Slate] Respondent: Yes Age: 33 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1907 Gender: Female Race: White Birthplace: Missouri Marital Status: Married Relation to Head of House: Wife Home in 1940: Selah Rural, Yakima, Washington Map of Home in 1940: Selah Rural, Yakima, Washington Inferred Residence in 1935: Rural, Yakima, Washington Residence in 1935: Rural, Yakima, Washington Resident on farm in 1935: Yes Sheet Number: 13A Attended School or College: No Highest Grade Completed: High School, 4th year Weeks Worked in 1939: 0 Income: 0 Income Other Sources: No Neighbors: View others on page Household Members (Name) Age Relationship Paul Henley 33 Head Bernice Henley 33 Wife Paul Henley Jr 11 Son Laverne Henley 10 Daughter 1950 United States Federal Census [Nelia Ivory Berniece "Bernice" Slate] Name: Bernice Henly Age: 43 Birth Date: abt 1907 Gender: Female Race: White Birth Place: Missouri Marital Status: Married Relation to Head of House: Wife Residence Date: 1950 Home in 1950: Yakima, Washington, USA Street Name: Dead End Road Dwelling Number: 169 Farm: No Acres: No Occupation Category: Keeping House Worked Last Week: No Seeking Work: No Employment Status: No Household Members (Name) Age Relationship Paul Henly 43 Head Bernice Henly 43 Wife | Slate, Nelia Ivory Berniece "Bernice" (I13967)

4168 | According to my sister, Diana (during a phone conversation we had last night - 26 Dec 2020) she said Grandpa had divorce papers in the glovebox (discovered there by Mom) of his car (or pickup) to divorce himself from his current wife at the time of his death. (David H. Drollinger 27 Dec 2020) Grandpa's wife's name at the time of his death was Ann. I have not been able to discover who she actually was. Hopefully, someone who knows will inform me or some evidence will surface that identifies exactly who she was. David H. Drollinger 27 Mar 2023) According to my mother, my Grandfather's real name was "Arnder Robert Paul Henley". She said that her cousin, Shirley (Hodge) Blood confirmed it. Apparently, he disliked the name 'Arnder' so much even from an early age that he refused to allow any one to call him by that name. He liked his second middle name of 'Paul' and somewhat liked his first middle name of 'Robert' and therefore, simply decided to go by the name of 'Paul Robert Henley', which is how he signed all of of his legal papers from what I was told by my mother. (David H. Drollinger 21 Mar 2009) The following is my transcription of my Grandfather, Paul Robert Henley's obit, copied from the photocopy of his obit in my possession. The photocopy of his obit is only of the obit clipping itself and not of the entire newspaper page, unfortunately, and therefore, I am not sure what newspaper printed it. I believe it was probably published in the Sunnyside Sun. I have done a search of 'Newspapers and Periodicals' on Ancestry.com for this obit and cannot find one. I need to contact the library or local genealogy society in Sunnyside to see if they can find what date, if at all, this obit ran.
