44700 Shirley Lind Roberts died February 2, 2010 at Brighton Gardens in Colorado Springs. She was born on May 24, 1930 in Butte, Montana to Emma Francis and Hjalmar J. Lind. Following elementary, middle and high school in Butte and Pocatello, Idaho she attended Montana State University and Idaho State University where she met and married her husband, Carl L. Roberts. She and Carl celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on January 4, 2010. Shirley was a wonderful wife and mother. As her daughter said, "She was always there for us." She was possessed of a keen sense of humor, and a ready, artful wit, great organizing skills and ethical principles second to none. She was a voracious reader and an eager traveler. When asked how she would like to spend a year in New Zealand, she answered, "I can be ready in 15 minutes." Outside the home, Shirley was a remarkably active devotee of libraries and politics. Early in her local life, she discovered a state law that allowed school districts to found public libraries. Enlisting the aid and support of two friends, Roberta Walsky and Jean Knight, she persuaded the Board of Education of School District #3 to establish the Security Public Library, which flourishes today. She subsequently served on its Board of Directors. She also, in a volunteer capacity, served for some years as Recording Secretary for the Security Water and Sanitary District's board meetings and at various times, did volunteer work for Legal Aid and Fountain Valley Cares. But her lasting love was politics. She was initially caught up by listening to Franklin Roosevelt on the radio and attending candidate nights at union halls in Butte. Locally she early became a member and officer in the Young Democrats and attending a Young Dems convention in Denver, met a most interesting state legislator, Dick Lamm. When he decided to run for Governor, Shirley was an enthusiastic volunteer. She was active in helping to establish a permanent Democratic Headquarters in Colorado Springs and served as a volunteer there as well as Precinct Committee Woman for many years. She was also one of the founders of the Democratic Women's Club (to which men may also belong) --- as she said "... to serve as a place for forums and speakers, and for recruitment, a place where people can learn what the Party stands for." Shirley was a very dedicated lady and as a capstone, served two terms as Chair of the El Paso County Democratic Party, the first woman to hold this position in El Paso County. Shirley is survived by her husband, Carl; sister, Jean Lind; brother, Robert Lind; daughter, Barbara Lind Sakala; son, Michael Stuart Roberts; five grandchildren, Leelya, Yarley, Beren, Jerrick and Milo; and several great grandchildren. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, February 13th at 10:00 a.m. in Shove Chapel on the Colorado College Campus, 1010 N. Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado. A reception will follow, also in the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, Shirley would like it if memorial contributions were made to Democratic organizations and causes of your choice.
