45403 | SOURCE: "History of Champaign County, Illinois with Illustrations,"1878 HARRISON W. DRULLINGER - The name of Harrison W. Drullinger of St.Joseph township appropriately appears in a work of his character. Hewas born in Butler county, Ohio, on the 6th of August, 1819. He isdescended from a German family which early settled in Pennsylvania. His grandfather emigrated from Pennsylvania to Ohio, about the yearl794, and settled in Hamilton county, where the city of Cincinnati nowstands. At that time there was only one house with a shingle roof inthe whole town. Philip DRULLINGER, the father of the subject of thissketch, was born in Pennsylvania in the year 1790, and was four yearsof age when he came to Ohio. The family afterward settled fifteenmiles north of Cincinnati. Philip Drullinger married Catharine WEST,of Pickaway county, Ohio. There were three children: Eliza, now Mrs.John O'BRIANT, living in this county; Julia, who married James COWDEN,one of the first settlers of St. Joseph township, both now deceased, and Harrison W. Drullinger, the only son. When Mr. Drullinger was about nine years of age, his father moved withthe family to Union county, Indiana. Here Mr. Drullinger went toschool. Subscription schools were held in log school-houses; slabs andrails answered the purpose of benches, and educational advantages werelimited in comparison with those of the present day. In 1839 he cameto Vermilion county, Illinois, his father having removed to thatlocality the previous year. October 1st, 1840, he married MaryBARTLEY, the daughter of George BARTLEY, one of the earliest settlersof St. Joseph township; he came from Pickaway county, Ohio, in 1832,and entered the land now owned by Mr. Drullinger, west of the SaltFork. From 1840 to the present time, with the exception of three yearswhen he lived on land which he entered a mile west, Mr. Drullinger hasbeen living on his present farm, which is composed of 212 acres. Heowns three hundred acres altogether, and at different times has boughtand paid for nine hundred acres, the greater part of which is nowdivided out among his children. His first wife died in 1848. His second marriage occurred in May,1849, to Elizabeth WHITING, daughter of S. S. WHITING. Mrs. Drullingerwas born in Pickaway county, Ohio, and came to Champaign county in1847. Mr. Drullinger has nine children; by his first marriage twodaughters, Eliza and Mary, the latter the wife of George LUDWICK; andby his second marriage William S., Lewis S., Henry P., Charles P.,Julia A.; Harrison S., Walter W., Minnie F., and Nora F. William S.,Henry P., and Charles P. are farming for themselves, and Lewis S. isdealing in stock at St. Joseph. He was originally a Democrat in politics, and in 1840 cast his firstvote for President for Martin Van Buren. With the exception of 1848,when he voted for Gen. Taylor, he continued to vote the Democraticticket till the agitation of the slavery question, when he tookdecided ground against the further extension of that evil in theterritories. On the rise of the Republican party he became one of itsearliest members, as he has since been one of its firmest supporters. In 1856 he voted for Fremont---the first National candidate of theparty, and has supported the Republican ticket at every electionsince. In the spring of 1866 he was elected supervisor of St. Josephtownship, and was re-elected the following year. While holding thisoffice the Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western railroad bonds wereissued, the people of the township having previously voted almostunanimously in favor of such a step. Mr. Drullinger in this matteracted in his official capacity, and in a perfectly legal and propermanner. His action was in accordance with the known sentiment of thepeople of the township at that time, and has since been sustained bythe United States Courts, on the validity of the bonds beingquestioned. He is a man whose influence has been exerted on the sideof morality. He joined the Methodist Church in Indiana, when nineteenyears of age. His temperance principles are of the strictestcharacter. He has not tasted a drop of whiskey for thirty years, norused tobacco in any form since he has been in the State. | Whiting, Smith Slaughter (I22837)

45404 | source: 1919 History of Henry Co MO, Uel W. Lamkin, Historical Publishing Co, pg: 821 --- John Cecil Trolinger - Nations preserve their histories and so do individuals. There is a sort of glamour cast around those brave ones who dared to come into a wild and unpeopled country, save for the savages and the wild beasts, and conquer the wilderness so that it might yield food and shelter for their loved one and also for their posterity. Mr. Trolinger is indeed proud of his sturdy ancestors, who were the early settlers of Henry County and laid the foundation for its broad fertile farms and prosperous institutions. John Cecil Trolinger was born July 26, 1863, in Leesville, Missouri, the son of Dr. John Philip Trolinger who was born in Springfield township, February 7, 1835, and died in Benton County, January 25, 1885; and Martha Ann (Nichols) Trolinger, who was born in Lafayette County, Missouri, May 31, 1840, and died February 10, 1891. They were the parents of eight children as follow: William H., of Honey Creek township; John Cecil, with whom this sketch deals; James H., Welch, Oklahoma; Mrs. Alta C. Shrum of Frederick, Oklahoma; Mrs. Martha A. Gilcrest, residing in Benton County, Missouri; Archie N., Quapaw, Oklahoma; Mrs. Allie May Fewell, deceased; Samuel W., at Dillon, Montana. The father of John Cecil Trolinger, who was Dr. John Philip Trolinger received his medical education in the Missouri Medical College at St. Louis, Missouri, and practiced medicine in St. Clair County until the Civil War, when he removed to Leesville, Missouri, where he practiced until a few years before his death. He moved across the line into Benton County and lived but a few years after his removal. Doctor Trolinger was the son of Henry Trolinger and Attelia Cecil Trolinger. The former was born in Virginia and came to Missouri in 1829, locating in Henry County in 1832. He entered land in Springfield township until the land was surveyed by the Government, when he, in 1837, filed on the land, becoming its legal owner. He was married in Virginia to Attelia Cecil, daughter of Philip Cecil, who was a very early settler of Springfield township. Philip Cecil owned a very valuable violin, which made music during the long lonely hours of pioneer life which is highly cherished and is now in the hands of his grandson, John Cecil Trolinger. The joys of companionship were rare in those early days, at least in the thirties, when the neighbors were from twelve to twenty miles apart. "But where there is a will there is a way" and the young people of those early days thought nothing of trips on horseback to visit one another. Mrs. Attelia Cecil Trolinger, in Springfield township, neighbored with Mrs. Fields of Fields Creek township and also with the Sweeney family in Clinton township. Those were indeed the days when friendships were cherished and their long rides on horseback were forgotten in the joys of the moment. The little children were brought also on these long neighborly calls and enjoyed them as much as their elders. John Cecil Trolinger was educated in the public schools of the county and attended Hooper's Institute, Clarksburg, Missouri, one year. He farmed in Springfield township until 1908. In 1896 he was elected County Assessor and served his county for four years. In 1907 he came to Clinton and was in the employ of the Elliston Insurance Company until his acceptance of the bookkeeper's chair in the Clinton National Bank, where he is now Assistant Cashier. He is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and also a stanch Democrat. In the Mason Lodge he is an active member of the Blue Lodge Works. February 14, 1888, was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Trolinger and Miss Laura L. Magers, the daughter of Desha and Icy (Broyles) Magers, the former a native of Kentucky, and the latter born in Macon County, Missouri, and laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Mrs. Trolinger was born in Macon County, Missouri, and she with her husband are the parents of two daughters: Leila, a graduate of Clinton High School, Warrensburg State Normal School, and is now at the University of Colorado; Mallie, the wife of C. E. Brodie, resides at Washington, D. C., but is now at Dallas, Texas, with her husband who is in the United States Aviation Corps, located at that place. Mrs. Brodie is also a graduate of Clinton High School and the Warrensburg State Normal. Mr. Trolinger is justly proud of his antecedents and looks with pride upon their lives as they wove the woof of life in the community. The first brick chimney to be built in Henry County is still upon the Cecil farm, built by the original owner. Also Mr. Cecil's will was the first be recorded upon the Henry County books. | Trolinger, John Cecil (I1123)

45414 | Source: Spirit of Democracy January 31, 1901 With sadness we record the death of Miss Rosa Drolinger who died from typhoid fever at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Mont Lowe in Wheeling. When the first news of the death of our dear friend Rosa, reached us it seemed almost too incredible for belief, for we had seen her a short time previous full of life and in that state of buoyant spirits so natural to her. Could it be that never again we were to hear that voice that had so often spoken words of cheer and friendly consolation? All that kind attention and medical skill could do was in vain. She was a regular attendant at church and Sunday school. She leaves to mourn, a father, two sisters, and three brothers and a host of friends. Her remains were brought to Sardis Monday on the "City of Wheeling." She was laid to rest Tuesday in the Sardis cemetery. Her remains were covered with beautiful flowers. The services were conducted b y Rev. J. M. Goddard. God has called you Rosa, dear, From this world of grief and woe; But our thoughts are with you Rosa, Underneath the earth so low. He has called you from your home. From the ones that loved you well, But has given you a brighter, Better home than tongue can tell, And the place you filled, dear Rosa, Will be vacant evermore, But we hope to greet you On the bright, eternal shore. 45417 | Source: Wabash Courier Terre Haute, 14 March 1833 A report has been put in circulation, calculated to wound the feelings of myself and family, by Andrew J. Trullinger. It has been stated by him, that my grandfather on my father?s side was a negro. In order to counteract the statement and in justice to the feelings of my children, I subjoin the following affidavits from which I think it will clearly appear that Trullinger has willfully lied. State of Indiana, Fountain County ? personally appeared before me, James Lewellen, a Justice of the Peace for Fountain County, Nancy Vanhook, who being duly sworn, says ? that she heard one Obadiah Watson, sworn before Charles Cade, Esq. in Pickaway County who testified to his acquaintance with the paternal grandfather of Lewis Phebus, from the time of his coming to America and that no appearance of Negro blood could be discovered in him and further sayeth not. Sworn to, and subscribed before me, this 1st day of February 1833. Samuel Lewellen, JP State of Indiana, Fountain County ? Personally appeared before me, Samuel Lewellen, Bridget Fitzgerald, who being duly sworn, deposeth and sayeth that she was acquainted with the paternal grandfather of Lewis Phebus, and that he had no appearance of Negro blood, but was, as she always believed, of French descent, and further sayeth not. Sworn and subscribed to before me, this first day of Feb 1833. Samuel Lewellen, JP From the above, the public can determine what reliance can be placed on the statement of Trullinger.
