45571 | Springville Herald Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 12:00 AM | Class of '64 North County Newspapers Editor: I just turned the big "four-O," not in age, but in years out of high school. It seems like just yesterday that I graduated as a self-appointed genius. Boy! That didn't last long! I've been asked by the reunion committee to pay tribute to the class of '64' and to the teachers who helped make us the "GREATEST CLASS" in Mighty Red Devil history! A long, long, time ago as young classmates, we boarded the ship of education and set sail for distant shores, seeking a treasure-trove of knowledge. At the helm of that ship were great teachers who set a true course, so that we could discover treasure chests filled with golden nuggets of knowledge. Plus they helped us navigate around the jagged coral reefs of apathy, complacency and discouragement, making it possible for each of us to become a successful captain of our own ship. Some of the skippers who helped us do that, have passed away. They earned the right, to have the great title "Teachers" engraved on their headstones. Thankfully, some of the surviving skippers are still residing in this community, but as teachers all have dropped anchor in the beautiful lagoon of retirement. As they rest on its white sandy beaches, they can bask in the sunshine, knowing there are ships on the high seas, filled with immeasurable treasure they helped discover; and sitting on the table next to their beach chair is a big glass filled with "appreciation" from the class of '64. A scroll listing those great skippers reads as follows: Dean Allen, Harold Bartlett, Fenton Billings, Phil Bird, Joe Boswell, Otto Collings, Richard Drollinger, Rell Francis, Alma Garrett, David Gledhill, John Hafen, Omar Hansen (Principal), Waldo Jacobson, John Jensen, Ardis Killpack, Joe Martinez, Loren Phillips, George Puckett, Gordon Smith, Ralph Snelson, Bill Staheli and Eli Tippetts. Clark King Springville This story appeared in the Springville Herald on page A2 Mr. Richard Drollinger-Springville High School I am nominating Richard Drollinger from Springville High School as the KSL Teacher Feature. Time is the best test of a great teacher. It has been over 40 years and his influence continues to affect many lives in the Springville community. When the Class of 64\' held our 40th Reunion last summer, the highlight of our conversations seemed to be centered in the influence of the great teachers who touched our lives. Mr. Drollinger was one of those great teachers. Although he is retired, he continues to substitute teach at Springville High School. His service to his family, church and community continues, as it has for many years. Everyone in our community knows Mr. Drollinger. In 1964 as a senior at Springville High School, we approached Mr. Drollinger with a proposal to give up his free preparation period to teach a Physiology Class the final semester to about a dozen of the top students. My academic background had been in math and physical science and I thought it would be good to have some experience with biological sciences. Mr. Drollinger didn't hesitate to give up his free period and teach the class. It was an outstanding class. At least one of those dozen students went on to become a medical doctor and a dentist. Although I chose to pursue a computer career with IBM, his class has directly impacted my life in many years of service in scouting and my personal interest in the outdoors. It is my honor to nominate Richard Drollinger as KSL Teacher Feature. Gordon T.
