Daniel Gentile, steel industry exec oversaw Dead Man's Curve project
Cleveland -- Daniel Gentile, who died March 2, was a retired corporate executive in sales and marketing for International Mill Service, a steel salvage and reclamation business that served 80 steel mills around the world. The 90-year-old resident of Old Brooklyn died at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He joined the Cleveland office of the company, a subsidiary of International Utilities, in the mid-1960s. The company's headquarters were in Philadelphia.
A daughter, Danette Gentile Kauffman of Washington, D.C., said her father's job was to visit steel mill executives around the country, outlining how International Mill could handle their waste and steel reclamation.
"Instead of the waste being dumped into a landfill or piles of slag, International Mill took the waste and metals that could be recycled, melted down the steel and put them back into service," Kauffman said.
Her father retired in the early 1990s.
Before his sales work, Gentile was an excavating and paving construction superintendent for several companies. Some of the projects he supervised were the building of five runway extensions at Cleveland Hopkins Air port in 1939 and sections of Interstate 90, including Dead Man's Curve in Cleveland. Gentile and his company were among those concerned about the design and safety of Dead Man's Curve, Kauffman said.
He also oversaw the excavation, sewers and roads at the NASA Glenn Research Center, then known as the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and parking lots at shopping centers -- Eastgate, Westgate, Southgate and Southland.
Gentile was a car collector for more than four decades. His cars included a 1935 Auburn 8-851 Cabriolet, which he had fully restored, and a 1957 Ford Thunderbird. Both are now in the collection of The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum.
His 90th birthday celebration was held at the museum in 2006.
He served as a Navy officer during World War II and trained as a Seabee.
Gentile was born in Cleveland and graduated from East High School. He was a theater arts and education graduate of Western Reserve University, now Case Western Reserve University.
Gentile's first wife, Gretchen, died in 2003. The couple had been married 63 years and lived in Lyndhurst. They were lay leaders to the senior high fellowship at the First Baptist Church in Shaker Heights.
Gentile married the former Marylee Drollinger in 2003.

48520 TROLINGER, Johnny Major 1919 - 1943
Aug 1943 - Loses Life In Action - Johnny Trolinger, son of the J. M. Trolingers, Near Calhoun, Dies in North African Area July 14 . The toll of war brought sorrow to another Henry County family Friday, August 13, when Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Trolinger, six miles northwest of Calhoun, received a telegram from the Secretary of War informing them of the loss of their son, Pfc. Johnny M. Trolinger, who was killed in action July 14, in the North African Area. The deep sympathy of the War department was extended the bereaved family and they stated a letter would follow. Johnny Major Trolinger was born near Garden City, September 22, 1919, and he and his family have been residents of near Calhoun for the past 12 years. He regularly attended the Highland Sunday School near there and was a graduate of the Merritt School, a thrifty, homeloving lad, who enjoyed helping his father about the farm. He was employed in Kansas City 6 months before he received his call to service, entering October 24 of last year. He began his training at Camp Wallace and Camp Barkeley, Texas, and from the South was sent to Ft. Devens, Mass, then to Camp Pine, New York, receiving his rank of Pfc. in April. He left Camp Pickett, Va. the last of June, and enjoyed the trip across immensely, writing his family of the unusual sights and experiences on the boat, and was especially pleased that he was never seasick. His last letters home were dated July 2 and 4, and the last one received included all the money he had at the time, and personal instructions, indicating that he might be going into active combat. His letters were all of cheery note, full of questions as to what the family was doing and of things he re-lived in pleasant memories. Thus Mr. and Mrs. Trolinger believe their boy's life was snuffed out in the height of action, his heart unafraid and anxious to do the task that he considered his job. He had told them that when he entered service he would be the best soldier he knew how, and truly lived up to the high standard he set for himself. Surviving this brave soldier are his parents, who feel his fine spirit about their farm where he loved to work with his car in leisure hours or linger about the house when outside work was not pressing; his brother, Carl Trolinger, who lives near by, and his sister, Mrs. Charles Crowley, of Kansas City, with whom he made his home while working there; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Starks of Clinton, and paternal grandfather, W. H. Trolinger of Belton. Mr. and Mrs. Crowley came to the Trolinger home Friday, after receiving the tragic news. Their son, Mack, has been spending the summer with his grandparents, assisting with the farm chores. - AWARDED PURPLE HEART - Pfc. Johnnie M. Trolinger was awarded the purple heart for bravery and wounds resulting in his death July 14, 1943. The certificate and letter were sent to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Trolinger of Calhoun, R. R. No. 2. The letter stated that the medal would be sent to them. Pfc. Johnnie M. Trolinger was a machine gunner at the time of his death. A letter from one of his pals stated he was killed in Sicily only 15 days from the time he landed in North Africa. The day he was killed, they advanced 15 miles and took three towns. He was a brother of Carl Trolinger, husband of Ruth Brown, who was a student in Windsor High School.

Because she clearly identifies herself as Carolina in the 1880 Census, it appears that that is probably her true birth name and that Caroline as she is also known as, is her probable nickname.

It does appear that Carrie ever had children.

48540 Trollinger v. State
Annotate this Case
227 S.W.2d 558 (1950)

TROLLINGER v. STATE.

No. 24615.

Court of Criminal Appeals of Texas.

February 1, 1950.

Rehearing Denied March 22, 1950.

John B. McNamara, Waco, H. S. Beard, Waco, for appellant.

Gene Maddin, Criminal District Attorney, Waco, George P. Blackburn, State's Atty., of Austin, for the State.

BEAUCHAMP, Judge.

The appeal is from a conviction for murder with a penalty of four years in the penitentiary.

This case was reversed on a former appeal because of the testimony of a deputy sheriff as to a statement made by appellant while under arrest. No other question was considered in the opinion and no other ground was stated for the reversal of the case. See opinion, Trollinger v. State, Tex. Cr.R., 219 S.W.2d 1018.

The facts in the case now before us are the same as in the former appeal, except as to the question presented on this appeal. We refer to that opinion for the statement of the facts in the case now before us.

The question presented by the one bill of exception is on the theory that it is the same as in the former appeal and, for that reason, the case should be again reversed. We do not so view the record. The bill of exception brings forward the complaint in the following language: "Be it further remembered that thereupon the State's Counsel then asked defendant `Haven't you since the death of Frank Wetzel, referred to these boys as sons-of-bitches?' to which question the defendant answered, "I probably did, but I didn't as many times as they called me a son-of-a-bitch out there that night." to which decision and order of the court in permitting the State's Counsel to propound said questions to said defendant `did you refer to these boys, Francis Wetzel, J. B. Wetzel and Marvin Schlemmer, as sons-of-bitches defendant tenders this his Bill of Exception No. 1."

We find nothing in the record to indicate the time referred to and the bill was accepted by appellant with the court's qualification to the effect that the appellant had testified that he had killed deceased in self-defense; that the question asked "was not objected to by defense counsel and no exception taken to said question or the answer thereto." In addition to the foregoing, the court says that the record does not disclose to whom the defendant was talking when he admits having referred to the boys as "sons-of-bitches", *559 and does not show whether he did so one minute after he shot the deceased or one minute before he testified on the trial of his case.

Under this qualification to the effect that no objection was made by defense counsel, and no exception taken to the question and answer, nothing is presented for our consideration. In the absence of a showing that the statement was made while under arrest, we do not think the holding in the former appeal is applicable.

We find no reversible error and the judgment of the trial court is affirmed.

On Motion for Rehearing.
DAVIDSON, Judge.

We have again reviewed the record in the light of appellant's contention that we erred in holding the facts sufficient to support the conviction, and remain convinced that a correct conclusion was reached originally.

The motion for rehearing by appellant is overruled.

Opinion approved by the Court.
Trollinger, Andrew Lafayette "Doc" (I7775)
