5641 | Anna's middle name may be Pearl. Refer to her daughter, Eulalia's death certificate. "Mary Burke" To : Drollinger@hotmail.com Date : Fri, 11 Apr 2003 10:45:02 +0000 Dear Mr Drollinger, I am doing some family history research and can include in it the Drollinger family. I saw earlier that you were offering ancerstoral information on Eli Drollinger, or Trullinger. I have some questions, if you can answer them. I found Eli Drollinger in the 1880 Iowa census, and with him was living his sister, Anna Shirts, who was divorced from her husband, Sidney Shirts. Sidney Shirts and Anna Trullinger had been married in Fountain Co Indiana in 1839 and later moved to Des Moines Iowa where they had children Roscius, Ellen, Melissa, Eulania and Lydia. I do not know at what point they were divorced, but Sidney was found to be living with his son Roscius' family in 1880, and there was Anna living with her widowed brother. Would you know anything about that? I can't figure for the life of me who the parents of Eli and Anna were. Can you help me with this? I have found a marriage record for a Jacob Trullinger and a Polly Gordy. I assumed that these two had something to do with Eli and Anna because the 1880 census gives their father as having been born in Pennsylvania and their mother in Delaware (Jacob was born in PA, Polly in DE) Also, Roscius Shirts had an old man living with him while he was farming in Kansas--his name was Benjamin Gordy. I am thinking he was a brother of Polly Gordy, and therefore Roscius Shirt's great-uncle. But I am hoping that you can correct my theory. Thanks, Mary Burke "Mary Burke" To : drollinger@hotmail.com Subject : Re: Date : Tue, 15 Apr 2003 14:19:40 +0000 Dear Mr Drollinger, Sorry to get back to you so late--I have so many schedule problems. Our lives are so busy. My husband is a CI agent with the Marine Corps, and he doesn't get home any earlier than 2000 every night, and I teach school now, in a Korean elementary school about an hour away (we live in Seoul) and on top of that, I am still in school myself. And trying to do genealogy when I find the time (I started this project when I was not working and I think I bit off more than I can chew--but I sure don't regret it!) I promised you some more info on Anna Trullinger's children. So, I will give you what I have. Like you, I took a good look at the collateral family lines, but I did not write them down. So I had to go back and look a little harder so that I could give you some info. I am in the beginning stages of genealogy work--I'm not a seasoned pro, so I don't have anything published yet. And--I have had a lot of help, without this, I couldn't have made it as far as I have. I have a friend, or a relative, I should say, Mr Pat Murray, in Des Moines Iowa (never met in real life!!--we just hooked with out common interest in researching the same family--the Freels.) He has given me a lot of "real" info, like marriage and death certificates and census. It helps, since he is back in the states and I am here in the Land of the Morning Calm. But, I am the one who finds the more "uncertain" stuff, like autobiographies and family Bible info. Anyway, here goes, with what I have: Sidney Shirts, son of George and Mrs Shirts, born in Hamilton Co, IN,1818 married Anna Trullinger on 15 May 1839 in Fountain Co, IN. (Sidney is listed in almost all records as having come from New York or Connecticut, but he was actually born on the way from this area. He was the first white child born Hamilton Co, Indiana.) They had the following children: Roscius, b Oct 1843, in Illinois, on way to Iowa from Indiana d 1907. He owned a home in Cambridge, Idaho but it is said he died in Polk Co, Iowa. Elisa Ann, b 1847 Melissa, b 28 Aug, 1848, Polk Co, IA, d 22 Feb 1913, same place Lydia, b 1856-1859, Polk Co, IA Eulala, b 1856-1860, Polk Co, IA I am a descendant of Roscius Shirts, so I know more about him than the other children. Roscius served in the civil war with C Co, 23rd Iowa Infantry. He enlisted in Adelphi, IA 6 Aug 1862 and was ets-ed 26 July 1865 in Harrisburg TX (I don't know the old-fashioned term for ETS. I'm prior Army myself,so I just say ETS) Upon completing his military service, he returned to Iowa and married Virginia "Jennie" Freel (b 6 Dec 1847, IN) on 11 Oct 1865. They had the following children: Mary Ellen, b 1866 (went by "Ellen" and married David Zachary, who was nearly 20 years her senior and was a brother to Roscius second wife.) Eli, b 1867 Anna, b 1870, in Topeka, Shawnee Co, Kansas. Married Daniel Buzzard in Polk Co, IA, died 12 Feb 1961, Weiser, Idaho She was my gg grandmother. They had 18 children and 9 lived to adulthood. Her daughter Eva was my great grandmother. Martha, b 1874, Kansas. Married George Wood in Nez Perce co, Idaho. Jennie Freel Shirts must have died in Kansas. We find no further record for her. Roscius married Sarah "Sallie" Zachary 9 Oct 1876 in Des Moines, Iowa.(Sallie b April 20, 1848, Nashville, TN, died 1908 in Cambridge,Idaho.) They had the following children: Rosie, b 1879 Robert Bejamin, b 21 June 1883, married Mattie Alderson in Cambridge,Idaho on 16 June 1918. (He had married and divorced a Sarah Williamsand had one child with her, but I don't know what that child's nameis.)They had children Edna, Frank, and Lucile. Harris, b Oct 1886 Lydia Belle, b 1889. She went by "Belle." She married John Stewart in Cambridge, Idaho, and had Clyde. I am sure that Rosie died young. She is not listed as living with the family past the age of six. Roscius Shirts--after marriage to Jennie Freel and the birth of his two oldest children, he lived and farmed in Chelsea twp, Butler Co,Kansas. He is in the 1870 Census, along with his Uncle James and greatuncle, Benjamin Gordy. His father Sidney, lived in Nemeha Co, Kansasin 1859. Roscius younger sisters must have been born there.(Therefore, Anna must have lived there with him.) In 1880, Roscius was back in Iowa with his new wife Sallie and his father Sidney was living with him. His mother, Anna, was living with her brother Eli. I don't know when they divorced, but one census that Mr Murray found confirms that they had divorced. Why, I don't know. Roscius and Sallie moved with their children (and Martha) to Washington Co, Idaho. Robert Shirts' descendants still live there, ina place called "Mann Creek." I am originally from Idaho myself. I grewup not too far from there. I don't know what happened to Eli Shirts, or Harris Shirts. I haveheard that Harris grew to adulthood and lived in Oregon, working as a sherrif's deputy. I can find no record of him anywhere. Roscius and Sallie had six children together--4 lived. I have a story of how Roscius left Sallie for a year and supposedly went to live with Indians. She took him back without a question. Okay-- Melissa Shirts Warren--Mr Murray found her grave in D.M., Iowa she was married to Thomas Warren and had William Alfred, Grace, John, and Eva May Lydia Shirts Wicker--married John Wicker and had Letta and Mary Alice Eulala Shirts Wicker--married Jacob Wicker and had Willie and Tally I didn't get too much info on Roscius' sisters because I just didn't have the time, but I will do it soon. The info is out there. Of course, John and Jacob Wicker are brothers, b in Ohio. well, I guess all this info is informal, but it give you some idea. You have approximate birth dates of all of Sidney and Anna's children,as close as I have found them. This is a work in progress-- It's 2300 and I have school (teaching school) in the morning! So I have to go! Mary | Trullinger, Anna (I5963)
