6751 | BALLARD, Robert G. - Of Flushing, age 91, died Sunday, September 11, 2022 at The Oaks at Woodfield. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2022 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, his son, Jamie Ballard officiating. Visitation 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2022 at the funeral home. Cremation has taken place. Visitation 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service. Those desiring may make contributions to Genesee Sportsman's Club, 8208 North Seymour Road, Flushing or the Humane Society of Genesee County. Robert was born in Flint, Michigan on February 14, 1931, the son of the late Francis and Edith (Trollinger) Ballard. He attended Flint Northern High School and was drafted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Dona J. Randolph while on leave before being stationed in Germany. Dona joined him there and they traveled a lot while in Europe. One they were back home, he returned to work for his dad at Ballard and Ballard Coal, Acorn Lumber and Builder's Market. He learned the construction trade totally and worked it the rest of his life. In about 1977 he and Dona bought an old farmhouse in Flushing. He remodeled it to her taste and she redecorated it completely. They lived there about 38 years. They both loved it. Dad also spent his whole adult life as a member of Genesee Sportsman's Club. He was President of the club for many years and the Treasurer. He shot trap and skeet, but mostly won trophies for trap. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. Hunting was usually at Houghton Lake staying at the cabin with his father-in-law, Harold "Poppy". All three kids joined in the hunting and shot their first deer with dad and Poppy. He was a life member of the NRA and loved fly fishing and really loved his grandkids. After retirement he and Dona moved to a condo in Flushing. He still enjoyed shooting until his eyesight got too poor and he had to give it up. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dona; his daughter, Debby and Tim Lintz; his oldest son, Mike and Bethann Ballard; his youngest son, Jamie and Lisa Ballard; grandchildren, Chad and Lindsey Ballard, Jessica and Andrew Palumbo, Amanda Ballard, Mallory Ballard and Lanie Ballard; great-grandchildren, Avery and Lucas Ballard, Aleena, Myla and Kaelyn Palumbo; sister, Helen Baum and nephews, Steven and Larry (Flo) Baum and favorite niece, Judy Bouchard. | Ballard, Robert Gary (I29873)

6757 | Baptised at St. Marks Lutheran Butler PA, Godparents Gottlieb and Mary Seif. As a small child he received a penknife as a gift and promptly carved his initials on each side of the front door to the house in Hannahstown, Butler County PA. According to my father, he was soundly spanked for this act. I saw these initials still on either side of the door in 1970. When the house was being torn down, my father had a piece of the board saved and it is in the celler in Slippery Rock. Adolph ran away to join the Army during the civil war. According to the stories in the family, he ran off three times. the first two times his mother was successful in bringing him back to the farm. He claimed to be 18 but in reality was only 16 at the time. He enlisted in Capt. Cooper's Battery Independent. Battalion (later named Battery A PA Light Artillery) Pennsylvania Artillery (100 days 1864) serving 19 May 1864 to 29 August 1864. Physical description 5 foot 9 1/2 inches tall, had brown hair and hazel eyes. Although his service record is slim it is a safe bet that he served in the fortifications erected around the Pittsburgh area to protect the steel industry and the Allegheny Arsenal. Some of those Forts were named and are familiar to native Pittsburghers. Forts Brunot, McKever, Fulton, Black, Smalls, McKinley, McKnight, Mechanic were the names that came down in an article in the now extinct Pittsburgh Press by George Swetnam. There were some 20 redoubts and 13 Batteries on a Corps of Engineers map made by a Captain Craighill. There is a frustrating one liner that teases. A Camp Brooks is mentioned but no location is given. " Battery A was mentioned as being stationed there." After the war he enlisted 4 Feb 1867 in K Company 11th Infantry Regiment and served until Experation Term of Service. He was discharged 4 Feb 1870 at Granada MS. According to his pension file he was married at the English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Allegheny City (since 1906 the north side of PGH) by the Rev J(ohn) G. Goettman ( the 2nd Pastor there). This church became Trinity Lutheran and was located at Stockton and Arch Streets. It was torn down for redevelopment in the late 1960s. The church is now located at 616 W. North Ave. The early records are at Thiel College Greenville PA. The church was an off shoot of the English Evangelical Lutheran on Grant Street which is one of the oldest churches in the city. Family tradition from my uncle Chick has it that he was a very strong man and could lift a barrel of whiskey to drink from. Resided 504 East North Avenue, Pittsburgh PA. He worked at various trades and was killed by falling off a ladder on Neville Island. Resided 174 Ohio Street, Allegheny City in 1890 veteran's census. | Drollinger, Adolph William Jr. (I2208)

A Camp Brooks is mentioned but no location is given. " Battery A was mentioned as being stationed there." Civil War Fortifications in Allegheny (1863) In an effort to defend the city and its war efforts from invasion, Major General Brooks oversaw the construction of thirty-seven forts and redoubts surrounding Pittsburgh in June of 1863. Five of these fortifications were planned and built within Allegheny City, and were the only fortifications to be numbered. Fort #1 was called Fort McKee? It was located on Colfax Street near Island Avenue in the vicinity of Mount Union Cemetery (today, this is Division 1 of Union Dale Cemetery). It is believed that this fortification was constructed for the defense of the railroad yards in Manchester. This site is no longer visible due to 20th Century buildings. Fort # 2 was originally called Fort Brunot, although it is most often referred to as Fort McKeever. It was built on the McKeever farm on what was known as Black Lane (now Marshall Avenue) on the hill rising above Fort #1. The shape of this fort was unique because it was a square. Today, residences of this neighborhood believe that you can still see remains of the forts earthen works on the grounds of the Pressley Ridge School. This fort was one of the only structures that were completed during the Civil War. The name Brunot was in honor of Allegheny Resident, Felix R. Brunot a prominent lawyer, who was also the honorary chairmen of the Sanitary Fair that was held in Allegheny in 1864. Fort #3 was unnamed and was located near today's intersection of Marshall Avenue and Perrysville Avenue. Fort # 4 was called Fort Fulton and renamed Fort Childs? It was located east of the other Allegheny fortifications and was adjacent to today's Northview Heights housing development. This fortification guarded the Butchers Run Valley and the Plank Road. As late as 1991, remnants of the fort were still visible. Fort #5 was called Fort Kirkwood? It was located on land owned by Judge Lowrie and is most likely the site of today's St. Nicholas Cemetery in Reserve Township (just outside the border of Allegheny City). The fort overlooked Girty's Run, the borough of Millvale and had a commanding view of the Allegheny River. Of special note, this fort was completed by labor from Allegheny's African-American citizens. This is the only known site that utilized the labor of the African-American community. Nothing is known to remain of this fortification. After the war he enlisted 4 Feb 1867 in K Company 11th Infantry Regiment and served until Expiration Term of Service. He was discharged 4 Feb 1870 at Granada MS. According to his pension file he was married at the English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Allegheny City (since 1906 the north side of PGH) by the Rev J(ohn) G. Goettman ( the 2nd Pastor there). He worked at various trades and was killed by falling off a ladder on Neville Island. Resided 174 Ohio Street, Allegheny City in 1890 veteran's census. According to my father he was not a very nice chap at all. He would beat his daughter in law to get money to drink with and never paid his rent. The owner of the house being the aunt of his wife. Supposedly he wouldn't go to work unless he had 2 half pints of whiskey. 6760 | Baptised St. Marks Lutheran Butler PA Godparents Gottlieb and Margaretha Seif. According to grandson W. Phillip Glunt he went west to Ellis county Kansas, lived in a dugout. He died of Pneumonia in Denver CO after driving horses there to sell to the Army. Supposed to be buried in Ellis Graveyard but no stone found. This according to interview with the late W Philipp Glunt in the late 1970s. My father claimed he got land out there based on military service of Adolph W. Drollinger, nothing found to back this up. The 1880 mortality census for Pottawatomie County Kansas said he was a stockman and died of typhoid fever in Feb 1880. This would have been given to the census taker by his wife, Bertha. He was a member of the IOOF in Saxonburg PA. Whether he continued as a member in Kansas is unknown. He was in Allegheny City with his brother and came back to have his daughter Della baptised in St Luke's. Why and when he went to Kansas is unknown. Perhaps it was because of his sister, Emma, and her husband. Yet he went further west to Ellis and they settled in Pottowatamie and Riley County area. Confirmed Palm Sunday 1865, moved to Allegheny City 1871. Possibly to live with his older brother? Married St Luke's 17 Nov 1874, after birth of oldest daughter, Viola. His daughter Della Philippina born 22 Nov 1877 baptised there. | Drollinger, Philipp Gottleib (I2215)

I Leonard Kelch, feeling the burden of age and conscious that my days will soon be numbered, do leave this as my last will and testament, to wit, to my wife I leave a comfortable maintenance during her life, to be derived from any real or personal property of which I may die posessed, and that she have the privilage of retaining my real and personal property in her posession, or so much of it as shall remain after all my legal debts are discharged, or should she become dissatisfied or should she become incapacitated from age or affliction, it is my request that my Executor, at her desire, would at public sale dispose of all my property and apply the proceeds as above directed , or so much of them as may be found necessary to insure her comfort . And at her death what remains to be divided equally among my heirs namely Phillip Kelch, Rachel Roberts, deceased, John Kelch, Samuel Kelch, Leonard Kelch, Ruel Kelch, Alice Davis, Deceased, Christena Perry, Hyram Kelch, and Levi Kelch the deceased of my children shall have their part distributed among their children. In Witness I have signed this, this day and date above mentioned. Samuel S. Russells John D. Gormo xx Leonard Kelch his mark Tyler Co. Court July Term 1848 The previous will of Leonard Kelch was copied from an old handwritten copy which was found in a box of belongings of Fannie J Kelch (Conrad). Fannie died 10 Feb 1908 in Eugene, Ver. Co.,IN. She was the youngest daughter of John G. Kelch and was probably the last to leave his household in Jasper Co., IL., when he died. Fannie married Abram Conrad, a law officer who was knifed to death in Eugene in 1892. Maybe, the copy, of the will, that Fannie had was the one that was sent to her father, John G. Kelch at the death of his father, (Leonard). Leonard died in 1848 when John G was living in Eagle Creek Village, Boone Co., IN. We know that because that is the year and the place that his son Levi R. was born. Name: Leonard Kelch Company: 123 REG'T (FEB.-MAR., 1815,) VIRGINIA MIL. Neril. Peter writes: "I thought to myself "What if he was referring to someone named Neville?" Sure enough I found a prominent family named Neville. General John Neville and his son, brevet Brigadier General Presley Neville, a son-in-law of Gen. Daniel Morgan. They were from the area of NW VA and SW PA. Presley was an aide to Lafayette for 3 years. Presley was a colonel when he was captured at Charleston. He was exchanged in May 1781 in time to be the man in question. It sounds like the sort of job such a man would be given. In later years he is referred to as General Neville, although I am not sure when he was given that rank. It might be interesting for me to check that out more thoroughly." Holston River then in the State of North Carolina in the County of Greene at the house of a man named Waddle after having served three months as a volunteer private soldier in Captain John Tipton's company of North Carolina troops of mounted men on or about 7th day of September in the year 1782 he served with Virginia militia and North Carolina troops and with no other kind of troops to the Best of his knowledge and belief he knew and was well acquainted with General Savare or Savaree [sic, Sevier ?] who commanded the Expedition against the Cherokee towns he knew but few officers Except those under whom he served he has stated all his services in the war of the revolution to the best of his recollection he is too old and infirm to attend at the Court house of the said County of Tyler from which he lives 14 miles he does not know of any Person living that can testify to his Services he has lost all his discharges many years ago he has no documentary Evidence of his service putting all his Services together he was six months in the Service of the United States within the period of the revolutionary war he further states that he was a standing volunteer in Captain Tipton's Company - from June 1782 till the first day of December 1783 a period of 14 or 15 months that he held himself in readiness to march at a moment's warning but was not called out Except the three months tour to the Cherokee towns before named he hereby relinquishes Every claim whatever to a pension or annuity - Except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State declarant thinks proper here to state that when a very old man during the Late war he substituted in the place of a man named William Burkett who was Drafted in the Virginia militia from our County and further that the officers conferred on declarant the office of Corporal as a reward for his devotion to his Country's cause and further that he marched as far as Kingwood in the County of Preston on his March to Norfolk when the news of peace arrived he wishes not to be understood to claim a right to this service he only thinks proper to have it mentioned in his Declaration. 6774 | Barbara (Hall) Gaffney, born April 2, 1929 made her transition peacefully on August 20, 2015 at age 86, lovingly surrounded by her children, grandson & her niece who sang for her in her final days at home in San Bernardino. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Vince, 2 months after their 50th anniversary (2002), brothers, Francis Trullinger (1962) & Bill Hall (2000), & sister, Lois Trusty (2005). She is survived by her children who were also her loving caregivers, Cheryl & Steve, both of San Bernardino, grandson Sean Gaffney, granddaughter Christina Flowers, & great grandson Ayden McLaughlin, all of Yucaipa. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Mickey (Hall) Rife of San Mateo, brother-in-law Jim & wife Margaret Gaffney of El Paso, TX, and her nieces & nephews. Barbara, a lifelong resident of San Bernardino was a loving wife & mother, devoted her life to her family to which we are eternally grateful. She graduated from San Bernardino High School, & then worked at Roy Davis Camera Shop in downtown San Bernardino where she ?colorized? black & white photos & was quite excellent at it. She was athletic, loved playing tennis & often camped right on the beach (in the good ol' days it was allowed) with a group of friends along with her brother Bill & Vince's sister Yvonne (Mickey). It was on one of these campouts that she met the love of her life, Vince Gaffney. In their 20's, they married & bought a home in San Bernardino where Barbara was a homemaker & lived there for over 60 yrs. She devoted her life to her husband, children & cared for her aging parents & in-laws when in need. It was evident she loved gardening as soon as you saw her yards. She landscaped her yard with many unique plants & her Dichondra lawns were immaculate. The backyard & pool held many gatherings always with music. Early on there'd be house parties with friends & neighbors that were always fun with music & dancing. We're so thankful we were introduced to music & dance at a very young age. Whenever we hear Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Tom Jones, Creedence Clearwater, Kenny Rogers, Aretha Franklin & James Brown, it brings back great memories. "Love Lifted Me" became a family sing-a-long after renting a beach house with long-time friends Betty & Howard Arnold & daughter Cindy as we'd all sing it together. Mom really loved the song; it will always hold special memories for us. Some of our fondest memories are of mom belting out songs while doing housework. Barbara & Vince were the first "daycare providers" for their grandson Sean which made many wonderful memories of their love for their grandson. Barbara was a unique, determined, but modest woman of few words who never wore her emotions on her sleeve. She wasn't religious, but more spiritual in nature. She had a belief in God, and taught us to live by "The Golden Rule". She selflessly did for others, never expecting anything in return. She was so strong & brave ? We never realized just how much until she pulled through a few medical situations. One being at age 77, fell off the kitchen table stepping down to a chair after fixing a window blind. She broke her leg & spent over an hour dragging herself to the living room to reach the phone. Another time she had a fall on the back patio where she kept trying, but couldn't get up. She spent over 30 hours on the cement in December's 40 degree weather overnight wearing only a shirt & pants until she managed to drag herself over to a plastic tarp and used it to cover herself. At the hospital, they couldn't even get a reading of her vitals. She pulled through and was considered the hospital's "Christmas Miracle" that year. When she put her mind to something, she didn't quit. If she was told she couldn't do something, she'd take it as a challenge and prove them wrong. This was the case even up to Jan. 2015 as she continued physical therapy in attempt to recover from her last fall in August 2014 where she had multiple fractures (pelvis in 2 spots, neck of L femur & upper L arm). By then her body was weak, & she never regained the ability to walk again. In late July the emphysema/COPD advanced suddenly after all the fires nearby and was just too much for her frail body. She was such an inspiration to her family & especially her grandson Sean, who wrote her a poem for her 85th birthday about how strong she was. She will be terribly missed, but forever etched in our hearts. Her service will be graveside at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Montecito Memorial Park & Mortuary 3520 East Washington St., Colton, CA 92324 | Trullinger, Francis Quarton "Trolly" (I11727)
