7052 | Benjamin Blue, was born in 1802 and died February 25, 1867. He married Margaret Riley who was born in 1795. She died August 7, 1881. Both are buried in the Mentone Cemetery. They came to Kosciusko County, Indiana in 1835. They moved into a bark shanty built by the Indians and had to keep fires burning at night to keep hungry wolves from the door. It is said Benjamin and his wife were the first white people to permanently settle in Franklin Twp. Benjamin was a Representative in the Indiana General Assembly, 1850-1851. While Benjamin was a lad, the family moved to Fayette Co. OH, where he attended the subscription schools of the neighborhood and attained a basic education in the "three R's". Upon attaining manhood, he sought the hand of Margaret Riley, and they were married in Fayette Co. OH. For 12 years after their marriage Benjamin rented and worked tracts of land. It was hard to get ahead, so they decided to go west to seek better opportunities. He made a trip to IN in 1834, traveling most of the journey on horseback, and learned that he could greatly better his condition there. So, in the Fall of 1836, he placed his family into covered wagons and moved to Kosciusko Co. IN. He then received from the government title to a half section of the best land that he could find, in what is now Franklin and Harrison Twps. He was probably the first settler in Franklin Twp. Here they carved a life out of the wilderness and Benjamin later served his county in the State Legislature (ca1851). He was a member of the Democratic Party. Census records indicate that Benjamin and Margaret raised many orphan children; some were grandchildren and grand-nephews and nieces, and others bore no apparent relationship. Stacy Rockhill (b.ca1843) was living with them in 1860 and appears to be a sister of the second wife of William. | Blue, Benjamin (I1166)

7064 | Benjamin Franklin Ross was Catherine Ashby Ross' son. He was married to Rhoda E. Bonebrake. It appears that Benjamin was living with his brother-in-law Josiah Valentine Bonebrake in 1870. Josiah's wife - Sarah B. Ross, wasn't on this census at this time. Benjamin also must have moved to Oregon in about 1860 according to census records of 1860. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=38047840 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ROSS was one of the early pioneers of Oregon and during life he was identified with many of the business enterprises of Coos county which became the stepping stones marking the progress of that county from an uninhabited wilderness to a prosperous and well populated district in the state of Oregon. He was born November 27, 1827, in Spencer county, Indiana, and was the son of Bran and Catherine (Ashby) Ross, who later removed to Iowa, where the father died at the age of forty-five years. The mother afterward removed to Oregon, where she passed away in 1882, at the age of eighty-eight years, in Coos county. They were the parents of fourteen children, of whom only two are living: Mrs. Bonebrake, the widow of Josiah V. Bonebrake, of Coos county, Oregon; and Mrs. Louisa Hodson, the widow of Jonathan Hodson, of Coos river, Oregon. Benjamin Franklin Ross was reared in his parents' home and received his early education in the public schools of Marion county, Iowa. He was by trade and occupation a stone mason and devoted his attention to the business of his craft until 1850. In that year he emigrated to Oregon, crossing the great American desert with ox teams, settling first in Jackson county and later in Coos county. He was one of the first twenty-five white settlers in that portion of the state and was one of the first to build a residence in this county. On reaching Oregon he took up a donation claim in Lane county and later removed to Coos county, where he settled in 1851. To him belongs the distinction of having built the first hotel in Empire, which he operated for several years and he was also the builder of the first house of that place. He later engaged in the butcher business at Marshfield, and in 1864 settled upon his homestead on Ross Inlet where he continued to reside until the time of his death which occurred March 15, 1912. During the years of his life as a farmer he was also engaged in raising stock of which he made a specialty. At the time of his death he left a landed estate consisting of three hundred and twenty acres of highly improved agricultural land and was also interested in various gold mines in Coos county. Mr. Ross was united in marriage September 10, 1864, to Miss Rhoda E. Bonebrake, a native of Iowa, her birth having occurred April 19, 1842. She is the daughter of Jacob and Lavina (Drollinger) Bonebrake, the former a native of Ohio and the latter of North Carolina. They celebrated their wedding in Indiana, where they lived for many years and then removed to Iowa, being among the first settlers of that state and there continued to reside until 1862. In that year they removed to Oregon where they established their home and continued to live during the remaining years of their lives, the mother having died in October, 1883, and the father in 1894. They were the parents of seven children, five of whom are still living: Cynthia A., of Stockton, Kansas ; Rhoda E., the widow of the subject of this review; John W., a resident of Coos county Oregon; Mrs. Josephine Riggs, of Marshfield, Oregon; and H. S. Bonebrake, who resides on Ross Slough, Coos county. Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Ross became the parents of one son, George F., who was born December 13, 1865, and who is engaged in farming on the old homestead. He was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Black, the daughter of Henry and Sarah (McGee) Black, both of whom were natives of Missouri and who emigrated to Oregon in 1864, and at present are living at Marshfield in Coos county. To Mr. and Mrs. George F. Ross three children have been born; George F.. Jr., born on July 29. 1905: Mary E., who was born September 30, 1907; and Robert Everett, whose birth occurred February 25, 1912. Mr. B. F. Ross gave his political support to the democratic party but was liberal in the exercise of his franchise. He was one of the veterans of the Rogue River Indian war of 1854. and a devout member of the United Brethren church. He was a man highly respected by all his friends and associates and for many years was a prominent citizen in the community in which he lived. Mrs. Ross now resides with her son George. The death of Mr. Ross brought loss not only to his family but removed from the state one of its early pioneers who had accomplished much for the business and agricultural development of what is now one of the richest sections of Oregon. 7082 | Benkelman, Nebraska Post, April 1920 Thomas C. Kimsey Thomas C. Kimsey, Dundy county's earliest settler, passed away at his home in this city last Friday evening. While he had been in failing health for some time, the end came quite unexpectedly. Shortly after suppertime he arose from his chair to retire for the night, when he suddenly reeled and fell over dead. Mr. Kimsey was one of the earliest settlers in Dundy county, coming here from Nemaha county in 1880. He settled on Indian Creek, where he engaged in farming and stock raising. He weathered the storms of adversity with a stout heart and unlimited faith in the future development of this country. In 1905, with his advanced age and growing infirmity, the life became too strenuous for him and he sold the place to Andy Rosenfelt and moved to Benkelman where he resided until his death. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, Rev. E. C. Staley conducting the services in the presence of a large body of Odd Fellows, Rebekahs and friends. The Odd Fellows conduced the services at the grave. Thomas C. Kimsey was born in Kentucky on March 16, 1833, and departed this life April 30, 1920, age 87 years, 1 month and 14 days. He went from Kentucky to Peoria, Ill., and in 1857 moved to Nemaha county, Neb., where in the same year he was married to Elizabeth Clark. To this union were born two children; John Walter Kimsey of Max, Neb., and Mrs. Bell Warner of Sacramento, Cala., who departed this life two years ago last January. After the death of his wife, Elizabeth Clark, in 1864, he was married to Sarah Ann Bailey of Red Oak, Iowa, August 3, 1865. To this union eleven children were born, six having preceded him into the other world. The five living are: Lillie F. Bohrer, of Red Cloud, Samuel K Kimsey of Haigler, Neb.; Ora May Nichols, Iola, Colo.; Rosie Nellie Ochs, Wauneta, Neb., and Florence Lewis of Colorado. He located in Benkelman June 20, 1880, where he has since made his home. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, one brother, Enoch Kimsey of Derby,. Iowa, two sons and five daughters, 33 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. He joined the Independent Order of Odd Fellows about fifty years ago and was a member of the local lodge in Benkelman at the time of his demise. He united with the Methodist church at Benkelman January 26th, 1908, proving a faithful member until the end. | Kimsey, Thomas Cottingham (I8558)
