    • Obit: "Pioneer Business Man of Radford Passed Away Last Night

William H. Hawkins, 83, one of the pioneers of this section and a highly respected citizen of Southwest Virginia, passed away last night at 10:35 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. B. Gordon in Radford, where he has resided for several years.

News of Mr. Hawkins' death came as a profound shock to his many friends in this section as it was thought he had entirely recovered from a recent illness which kept him confined for many weeks at the Pulaski Hospital.

After being taken home from the hospital Mr. Hawkins condition continued to respond to medical attention, but Saturday morning he suffered a relapse, death coming after everything possible had been done by skilled physicians to save his life.

Mr. Hawkins was born in Franklin county and was the son of an old Virginia family.

He married Miss Cynthia Cecil and of this union the following children survive: Mrs. B. C. Taylor, of Pulaski; Mrs. W. B. Gordon, of Radford and W. W. Hawkins, of Marion.

Mrs. Hawkins preceded her husband to the grave two years ago.

Mr. Hawkins was a life long member of the Methodist church and stood high in the esteem of his fellow citizens.

He was engaged in the mercantile business at Dublin for 25 years before retiring and moving to Pulaski, after Mrs. Hawkins died he went to Radford to make his home with his daughter Mrs. Gordon.

He was the senior member, of the Hawkins Taylor Co., which operates stores at Radford, Pulaski, Wytheville and Marion and was a very successful business man.

Until his illness Mr Hawkins was a frequent visitor in Pulaski and numbered his friends here by the score. Always of a genial, friendly disposition his company was sought wherever he was found.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence at Radford with interment in the Dublin cemetery at three o'clock Other details had not been arranged at a late hour last night.
