- Joseph B. "Joe" Barker, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Saturday, March 4, 2023 at his home in Martinsville.
He was born Wednesday, February 11, 1942 to the late Lloyd and Madge (Drollinger) Barker in Kingman, Indiana.
Joe grew up in LaPorte and graduated from LaPorte High School. He went on to earn his Bachelor?s degree in business from Indiana University and his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Indiana University School of Law in 1967. While at IU, Joe was a proud member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
Joe started his professional career in the United States Department of the Army in Cincinnati for two years and then worked as an attorney alongside Sam Kagan for over eight years. Joe opened his own law practice in 1977 in Martinsville and served his community in over 11,000 cases. Joe cherished and appreciated his longtime, devoted secretaries Jean Goss and Zoe Kirk and retired from practicing law in Morgan County after 50 years.
While he was a kind and gentle man, Joe was passionate about seeking justice for his clients. Joe Barker was affectionately known as "The People's Attorney".
Joe loved to travel and visited over 20 countries throughout his life and loved spending time at his beach house in Fort Myers Beach. He loved investing and studying the stock market. Joe loved spending time with his family. He was a devoted father and stepfather and enjoyed watching and supporting his children and stepchildren in all their sports, theatrical, musical, educational, and career endeavors.
He is survived by his wife of over 30 years, Cynthia "Cindy" J. (Wilson) Barker, who he married May 30, 1992; daughters, Jennifer Barker and husband Doug of Martinsville and Rose Napier and husband Steven of Indianapolis; son, John Barker of Indianapolis; stepdaughters, Amy Bain and husband John of Fort Mill, South Carolina and Rachel Fishman and husband Zach of Fishers; grandchildren, Emily Johnson, Carson Bain, Sam Napier, Colton Bain, Dash Napier, Elijah Fishman, Olivia Bain, Layla Fishman, Ruby Bryant, Micah Fishman; brother, Robert Barker and wife Pat of Bloomington.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Lloyd and Madge; brothers, Gene Barker and Eldon Barker; stepson, Jason Casamer.
Private services for Joe will be at Costin Funeral Chapel with John Bain officiating.
Joe will be laid to rest at Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon.
