- Gordon,
Thank you for the information you sent! It seems a lot more complete and accurate compared to I have located thus far in other sources.
Right away, I must admit I am not entirely, 100% positive that the Drollinger line I have located is truly part of my ancestry. However, I am the proverbial 99 and 44/100 % sure!
Here is my logic trail that leads me to this point: My father gave me the family Bible of Elijah H. Miller, who was the uncle of my paternal grandmother. He lived in Missouri, near
Warrensburg. In the front of the Bible, someone wrote his full name: Elijah Harkreider Miller. This Bible chronicles many of the descending family members of Elijah and his wife. One of these, a cousin of my grandmother, submitted a lot of family history to the Johnson County
Historical Society in Warrensburg in the late 1950s. The information submitted by this lady details her understanding of the ancestry of Elijah Miller, including the naming of his mother as Anna Drillinger (note the spelling difference at this point). Anna was, according to this information, born in Ohio, most likely in Darke County, which is where she married for the first time. Her first husband was John Miller, and I have no information on this point as to
his ancestry.
Elijah H. Miller was born in New Madison Township, Darke County in 1845. Following this, they moved to Wabash County, Indiana. Two more children were born and then John Miller died, probably around 1860. In 1861, Anna married John N. Allworth, who was born in Bath, England. They ended up in Fayetteville, Missouri, northwest of Warrensburg. They had five children. Anna died in Johnson County and is buried in Liberty Hill Cemetery, which is about 4 miles due north of Warrensburg. Her grave marker lists her date of death as 4 March 1896 and her age as 68 years, 5 months and 3 days. We visited this cemetery this past summer.
This death date and age fit with the marriage date of 1826 for Elijah Harkreider and Barbara Drollenger.
I indexed the name "Elijah Harkreider" in both Roots Web and Family Search. The hit I got was "Elijah Harcrider" who was married to "Barbara Drolenger" in Preble County, Ohio on 28 May 1826. Darke and Preble Counties abut each other here in southwest Ohio. New Madison Township is one of the southern-most townships of Darke County and is just north of Preble County.
The names are very similar here and the locations here in southwest Ohio fit. So, I am quite sure that the Harkreider and Drillinger names are the same as Harcrider and Drolenger/Drollinger. I presume that the Drillinger/Drollenger mix-up on the part of my grandmother's cousin may have come from recollection rather than documentation as she was in her 70s at the time she compiled the data.
Also, her data indicates the Harkreider/Harcrider line came into this country through the Carolinas in the years prior to the Revolutionary War. The ancestor who carried this name came from Germany and was shipwrecked off the coast as a teen ager. On reaching maturity, he or his son apparently served in the Continental Army as a Dray man. We
have no other information at this time.
John Miller and Anna Harkreider Miller Allworth are my great-great-grandparents.
I admit there's a lot of speculation and hypothesizing on my part in all this. I am going visit the genealogy library at the LDS church in Fairfield, Ohio today in an effort to get some films from them to research this further. I've already looked at census records at the public library in Cincinnati and didn't find anything conclusive. I'm going to look again as I only checked Darke County the first time and didn't look in Preble County. I live close enough that I can easily make a day trip to both Darke and Preble Counties to look in records. I live in Butler County, which is immediately south of Preble County. Eaton, the county seat of Preble County, is less than an hour's drive from my home.
I think I've rambled on enough about this for the time being. I will compile a descendant report for Elijah Harkreider as I understand it at this time. I'll mail it to you in a separate envelope as I'm not fully familiar with GEDCOM procedures at this time!
Thank you again for your information!
