- Nobility was inherited equally by all legitimate descendants in the male line. Many German states, however, required a marriage to a woman of elevated social status in order for a nobleman to pass on his titles and privileges to his children.

von
Karl Friedrich Drollinger (1688-1742)
The beggar-man, and the death
of
Karl Friedrich Drollinger (1688-1742)
A Beggar threw his crutch
Full of resentment in the depths of the Rhine
And said, angered at his fate,
O death, shorten my pain!
Death appeared to him out of pity.
Egg, voice of the beggar, You're here.
My comfort and staff was to me poor,
Oh to swim to him and bring him to me.

Dave and Gordon, When we were in Germany in 2012, my son, Jeff, and daughter, Danielle, and myself visited the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland. We were privileged to view the portrait of Karl Friedrich Drollinger. The painting is very old and is in need of some restoration. It was in storage during our visit, but they rotate it on the main show room on a regular basis. Dr. Georgi, Assistant Director, was kind enough to show us the painting in the storage room. Grant
