Notes - Per his Civil War pension file from the National Archives in Washington DC, Roscius enrolled as a Private in Company C of the 23rd Iowa Infantry on August 6th, 1862. He was detailed as a scout 29 January 1864 and captured by the enemy on 22 February 1864. He returned from being a prisoner of war on 9 August 1864. His prisoner of war records show him "Captured at Lavacca February 22, 1864 and paroled at Red River Lodge, Louisiana, July 22, 1864." He was honorably discharged on 26 July 1865. He met with an unfortunate death after visiting his sister on his re turn trip home to Idaho. He drowned in the Missouri River near Bartlett Iowa and was buried at Tabor Cemetery (Mills County) Iowa.
Information obtained from the Fremont County Historical Society from a book on Tabor Cemetery indicates that "R. Shirts buried somewhere near lot 211" and that he was found drowned in the Missouri River on 15 July 1907, believed to be about 65, was wearing a Union Jacket and had a railroad ticket in his pocket identified with the name R. Shurts. "Names of two sisters were learned one of whom he had been visiting." He was given a military burial. Years later, the WPA misidentified him as a Robert Shirts, which in 1980 was found to be false, as that particular Robert Shirts was buried elsewhere. The Tabor Cemetery book states that "the military status of R. Shirts buried in Tabor is unknown."
So the whereabouts of Roscius Shirt's burial place had remained a mystery until today, 2 March 2017. The case is now solved and Roscius now has a military marker memorializing his life and death.
