    • Winston-Salem April 15, 1937 - August 14, 2016 The Honorable James Albert Harrill Jr., 79, a former chief judge of the Forsyth County district courts and a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, NC, died on August 14, 2016. He was born to the late James A. Harrill, M.D., and the late Grace Robertson Harrill on April 15, 1937. He graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1955, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1961 (Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity), and Wake Forest University School of Law in 1964. A U.S. Navy veteran, Harrill served as a judge in both an active and an emergency capacity for 37 years. His deep community involvement included service on boards of the Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club, the Juvenile Justice Council of Forsyth County, SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now), Host Homes of Forsyth County (emergency shelter for children and psychological therapy for children and families), and as an instrumental planner and coordinator of the TASK Force against Domestic Violence. A model-train hobbyist, he was an active member of the national Train Collectors Association. He so enjoyed collecting and repairing antique trains and toys that his professional resume listed the ambition, upon retirement, to own a toy store and sheep ranch in Montana. Harrill is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie Cardwell Harrill; son James Albert Harrill III, Ph.D., (David Brakke) of Columbus, Ohio; son Willard Cardwell Harrill, M.D., (Kiran) of Hickory, NC; and daughter Lorraine Robertson Harrill Sham (Kelly) of Greensboro, NC; three grandchildren, Peter Austin Harrill, James Austin Harrill, and Madison Grace Sham; and sisters Nancy Claud Harrill of Winston-Salem, and Grace Elizabeth Harrill of Pinehurst, NC. A private family graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 20 at Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Institute of Marine Sciences, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 3431 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557.
