- Davis, Ruby Mary (Slate), passed away on February 3, 2011 in Mission Viejo, California.
Ruby was born on the family farm on August 31, 1911 in Ava, Missouri to John and Cornelia Slate. Ruby, the baby of the family, had ten brothers and sisters. Feeling restless and craving some adventure and a change of pace, Ruby's parents allowed her to move across country as a teenager to live with her brother and sister-in-law in Midway City, California in 1929. She boarded a train carrying only a small suitcase and the coat on her back.
While attending Huntington Beach High School, Ruby met her future husband, Boyd Davis, the school's bus driver. After purposely stealing his baseball mitt, he was forced to converse with her, starting a relationship that eventually would span over sixty-two years. Ruby married Boyd Davis on June 25, 1932. Ruby and Boyd had two sons, Lester, born in 1936, and Gary, born in 1942. Both boys were brought up in the family home in downtown Huntington Beach. Both sons, and subsequently their daughters, graduated from Huntington Beach High School. Indeed, Ruby was a steadfast, proud Oiler who attended as many Oiler reunions as she could, even into her 90s!
While Boyd worked for Getty Oil Company as a mechanic, Ruby juggled her mom duties while working at Orange Coast College as a Food Service Manager. She spent twenty-four years at OCC before retiring in 1971. Ruby also devoted her time and talents to The Rebekah Lodge District #50 as a Marshall and served as past President of the United Methodist Women.
Both faith and family were very important to her, and she remained devoted to her beloved First United Methodist Church in Huntington Beach, even when she became too frail to attend regularly.
Both Ruby and Boyd enjoyed camping in their trailer, square-dancing with close friends, and doting on their grandchildren. Her love for the California Angels was well-known and she knew all the players and their stats. If Ruby's life were a painting, it would surely be a priceless masterpiece. She painted everyone's world with love, hospitality, grace, and humor.
She lived long enough to experience many hardships and heartbreaking losses, but her faith sustained her and inspired others. If her life were a song, it would no doubt be an award-winning composition. She could often be seen playing the piano and singing, and she passed on her love for music to her family. She was devoted to her garden and took pride in her roses. The only thing more beautiful than a Ruby Davis rose was Ruby Davis' kindness, her class and style, and her inner beauty.
Her eldest son, Lester Davis, as well as her husband, Boyd Davis, preceded Ruby in death. She is survived by: her son, Gary, and his wife, Judy, of Carlsbad; granddaughter, Debby James, and her husband, Clyde, of Mission Viejo; granddaughter, Julie Farrow, and her husband, Mark, of Mission Viejo; granddaughter, Deanna Carne, and her husband, Robert, of Huntersville, North Carolina; great-granddaughter, Robin Wiessner, and her husband, Stephen, of Lake Forest; great-granddaughter, Courtney Farrow, of Mission Viejo; great-grandson, Trevor Farrow of Mission Viejo; great-grandson, Dakota Carne, of Huntersville, North Carolina; and great-grandson, Parker Carne, also of Huntersville, North Carolina; in addition to many other beloved extended family members and friends.

Psalm 23
The LORD is my Shepard
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green
pastures.
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in the path of
righteousness.
For His name's sake.
Even, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death.
I will fear no evil,
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort
me.
You prepare a table before me in the
presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil:
My cup overflows
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow
me all the days of my life,
And I shall dwell in the house of the
LORD Forever.
