- George Herbert Shaw, son of George E. and Myra Shaw, was born in Vinton, Iowa, February 2, 1874, and passed away at the home of his brother, Earl, in Oberlin, Kansas, June 21, 1944 at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 19 days.
He came to Kansas in 1885 and has lived in and near Oberlin since that time. On September 23, 1894, he was united in marriage to Estella Louise Drullinger, and to this union five children were born. One child died in infancy, and a son, Gayl, met with an accident which took his life on May 24, 1922.
The life of Mr. Shaw was spent first as a school teacher, then in the merchantile business and later a farmer. He has lived to see this town grow into a beautiful city and endured many hardships during his pioneer life. He was converted and united with the Methodist Church on February 7, 1909. He was a man who had a sense of humor and took great pleasure with his family and friends. Beside the loss of two children and his wife and companion for 38 years, a brother and sister preceeding him in death. All these tragedies left a lasting impression on him.
He had been ill for several years. In the last five months he has been bedfast his faith sustained him and he found comfort in repeating the scripture and in prayer. He showed unusual fortitude and patience during his illness. His children have taken turns in caring for their father and special mention should be made of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Shaw, who did all that loving hands could do to make him comfortable in their home.
He is survived by three sons: Glynn and Guy of Oberlin, Kansas, nine grandchildren, two of whom are in the service. One brother, Earl, of Oberlin: five sisters, Mrs. Vira Pelton, Topeka; Mrs. Chlora Kellogg; Mrs. Frank Lytle and Mrs. Will Johnson, Oberlin; Mrs. O. E. Furman, of Norcatur.
Funeral services were from the Methodist Church, Friday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. Howard Smothers officiating.
