Funeral services for Esther Trullinger, 105, will be (today) Thursday, September 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Reverend Lynn Gunderson officiating. Honorary Bearers will be Phyllis Richardson, Geraldine Rafferty, Jean Williamson, William Cook, Dwaine Duncan, Edward Gilbert, Darrell Gilbert, Jeannette Lantz, Mary Young and David Hilgenberg. A private family interment will be in the Annunciation Cemetery, Coon Rapids. Memorial contributions can be made to the United Methodist Church of Coon Rapids, Friends of the Coon Rapids Library, Thomas Rest Haven or any charity of your choice. Esther, daughter of Thomas Howard and Frances Gertrude (Blake) Unger was born July 2, 1900 on a farm near Bayard. She grew up in Coon Rapids, and the family lived on Seventh Avenue before moving in 1908 to the house on Main Street where Esther lived for 94 years. She graduated from Coon Rapids High School and attended business college in Des Moines for a short time. On January 14, 1918, Esther was united in marriage with Bernard W. (Barney) Trullinger in Des Moines. One son Robert was born to this union Esther and Barney lived in Coon Rapids where Esther was a switchboard operator and bookkeeper for the telephone company from 1919 to 1968. During those 49 years, she worked for four different companies and 11 different managers as the telephone service in Coon Rapids changed from switchboards to rotary dial phones. Following her retirement, she enjoyed having more time to raise flowers, read, play bridge with life-long friends and go to the races with Barney She also served as the receptionist at Thomas Rest Haven for a period of time after it first opened. Esther was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids, where she was a past circle member. Esther loved animals, especially dogs and horses. She and Barney traveled throughout the Midwest and made several trips to visit family in Oregon. When her husband died in 1979, Esther continued to live in their home and remained active in Coon Rapids life. She kept up with the news, always knew how the high school football and basketball teams were faring, worked a word puzzle ever y day, and canned her famous bing cherry olives every spring until her 101st birthday. Esther became a resident of the Thomas Rest Haven nursing home in Coon Rapids in 2002. She died there of natural causes on September 15 at the age of 105 years, 2 months and 13 days. Preceding Esther in death are her parents, husband, granddaughter Mary Esther Trullinger at age one month, and sister Marian Cook. She is survived by her son Robert W.
