Mr. William Ben "Bill" Rice, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away at the age of 91, in Lubbock, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in the First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater with The Rev. Howell Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater under the care and direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home.
Bill was born on February 1, 1918 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He married Maxine Trullinger on May 7, 1941 in Maryville, Missouri.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He lived in Sweetwater from 1941 to 1959 and again from 1963 until his death. He was an Independent Agent for 36 years. He was an Eagle Scout and a former Scout Master. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of W. W. II. He was a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and past president of Abilene Association of C.L.U. He was past president of Sweetwater Rotary Club, past president of Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce. In 1994 he was selected as Sweetwater's Outstanding Citizen of the year. He was a founding and chartered member of the Sweetwater Country Club. He was manager of Colonial Poultry Farms in Sweetwater from 1941 to 1959 and manager of Colonial Poultry Farms in Cullman, Alabama from 1959 to 1963. He was in the commercial egg business in Sweetwater from 1963 to 1967.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Maxine on September 1, 2000, and a sister, Idabel Rasmussen.
Bill is survived by: a son, William E. "Bill" Rice and wife, Edna of Lubbock, Texas; two daughters, Karen Shawver and husband, Paul, of Amarillo, Texas and Lou Ann Cox and husband, Terry, also of Amarillo, Texas; 9 grandchildren, Michelle Rice, William Rice, Russell Rice, Byron Smith, Darci Smith, Benjamin Shawver, Sara Cox, John Cox and Paula Guidry; and 3 great grandchildren.
